I have a Nikkor 1:3.5 f=2.8 SM lens. A quite pretty and useful bit of chrome and glass. Wanting to "dress it up" my search began for a proper shade and a few filters to help it out. Finally I've found a Nikkor site that covers its history. The description of the proper size is ''slightly larger than 34.5"! Slightly larger? Don't want to be picky , but SLIGHTLY!!!! Glad it was finally cleared up.

2.8 lens? Do you mean 2.8cm, which would be 28mm?
"Proper size" may well refer to the physical diameter of the lens, not the filter size. And I seriously doubt your lens is 34½ inches in any dimension.
KEH states a 34mm filter thread.

I have one of those 'weird filter size' lenses. Not nearly so prestigious as your Nikkor. It is a "duo-Tamron 135mm f4.5" comes with a teleneagative cemented doublet to extend the focal length to 225mm f7.7, like I said, weird lens. Oh yeah, almost forgot, configured for M42 mount.
The filter size appears to be just a bit less than 39mm. That size is just a little too big but a 37mm is way too small. I've not ever come upon any filter size between those two. I thought it might be an uncommon series size, like series 5.5 but have not been able to test that. Old advertizing photos seem to show that the lens originally came with a step-up filter adapter with the lens hood retaining the unthreaded filters, probably series 6

Thanks all for the helpful comments, but this is a rangefinder lens produced in the 50's . It's the chrome version. Very tiny LTM lens. A 34mm is so loose it falls out tried tape, wax string - UGH!

Check around for a push on Series adapter. The adapters were made in fractional sizes(lens) to Series(filter).
I suspect you're going to need a ??mm to Series Vl adapter.
The Series Vl filter measures about 35mm diameter.

You are failing to provide enough information for accurate assistance. This Nikon SP rangefinder manual has a filter table on page 29 that states it takes a Series VII or 43mm screw in filter.
