Re-taping film holders

2 of my film holders have light leaks in the hinge area and I was wondering if anyone has any advice for fixing them.

I'm planning on taping the hinge area with black gaffers tape to fix the problem.

I'm almost positive the problem is with the holders as the film was fogged in the rebate area (though they could have been seated into the camera wrong...)

Although I've never had to use it for that purpose, black gaffer's tape is supposed to work.

You can buy the real tape from Fidelity. I don't know if it is any different than gaffer's tape. Never used GT.

Don't use gaffers tape. It will work but it is very stiff and will interfere with keeping the flap down when loading film. The Fidelity stuff is ok, but may or may not fit your holders. As John suggested, the tape used for bookbinding is excellent for taping the flap ends. Our source for this tape is www. gaylord. com. We use the Filmoplast "T" for our S&S holders, but this product is only available in 3"X33' rolls at close to $40. However, I believe that their 11.5 mil vinyl-coated cloth "Bookcraft" tape, with release liner, would serve you about as well, and it is available in smaller rolls. For a roll of 2" X 5 yards of black tape the product number is GH-2558R-01, at $10.49 per roll.

I retaped several of my old holders with gaffer's tape. I agree with Sandy that the stiffness makes loading and unloading film more troublesome. But I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if that was all I had on hand and needed my holders fixed right away. It'll do the job.

But now that I know where to get the right stuff (thanks, Sandy), I plan to order a roll, as I have a few more old holders that need retaping.

The good think about gaffer's tape is that you it is fairly easy to remove it without leaving residue on the holder. So if you decide to re-do your holders with the bookbinding tape the job should be very easy.

But don't ever, ever, ever use duck (t) tape to tape the flap ends. Removing all of the residue that this tape leaves when you try to remove it is harder than cleaning your ears!!

Sandy, I went ahead and used gaff tape because, like you said, it can easily be removed and I have it already. I'll be shooting today so we'll see if it worked.
