RB76 Pro S question

Just got the RB67 and I am learning. I got back a roll of 120 film and noticed 3 frames had no exposure at all. I remember that a couple of times I had switched out lenses. I think I changed out lens after cocking shutter and advancing film. Did I do something wrong?

Shouldn't be anything wrong with that. I normally advance the film immediately after each exposure, and then cock the shutter. Changing lenses at that point is fine. Could you have just forgotten that you'd already advanced the film, and then just done it again?
What about mirror lock up? Did you shoot with MLU engaged and then not turn it off?

You probably moved the multiple exposure switch on the film holder. The red dot should not be showing.

And you changed the lens correctly. Owners manual states that the lens must be mounted after the mirror is cocked.

Which three frames? The first three, the last three, or three in between?

Did you put the dark slide in whilst changing lenses? (not necessary) and if so, is it possible that you took those three frames with the dak slide almost all the way in? (all but the last 1/4").

The first time I used my RB67 I got a couple of blank frames as the darkslide was almost all the way in. If it is not fully inserted, the shutter interlock will not work and will allow the shutter to fire.

I don't use the dark slide any more.

Steve is on to something... but unless you had this camera and backs thoroughly checked out when you bought it, some interlocks work and some might not on any comination of bodies and backs. Don't ask me how I know. Let's just say I work hard to remember to pull the dark slide on my rb ProS.

I have shot an entire roll of film with the dark slide in and both body and back were ProS.

This sounds more like a user error and not a mechanical one. Because of the double cocking, many times new users can't remeber if they advanced the film or not and sometimes advance unshot frames.

Developing a consistant routine is the key to shooting an RB. I don't cock anything till I am ready for a shot. This way I never have to wonder if I did or not. Some people like to recock after each shot but I find that asks for accidental firing while riding in the bag or on the shoulder.

I also never use my darkslide. I rarely have to change a back mid roll unless there is someting wrong with the camera, sort of like carrying a spare tire that hardly ever gets used. I'd probably have to dig to the bottom of the bag to find it anyway.

Sure enough, after receiving a cable release I never put the MLU setting back to normal. Oh well, live and learn. Its sounds like its either that or the double exposure setting.

Thanks everybody - My first several rolls were all ok except for a couple of double exposures. I just had gotten a 65mm lens and was switching back and forth - this could have caused me to become distracted. I think the first frame and then two in a row in the middle were not exposed. (for keithwms) I will watch the dark slide and the advance lever red dot closer next time I shoot - I think those two errors are my problem. This is my first med format camera and my results so far have blown me away - I think I am way too excited when I go out and shoot.

I suggest you keep the darkslide in the bag and only use it if you need to remove the film back. You can put in a new roll of film without removing the back (and therefore using the slide) and you do not need it for lens changing.

It sounds like you loaded the film roll upside-down and exposed the paper backing instead of the film, if the film wasn't exposed, it's an easy mistake to make.

Those who don't use darkslides must be aware of light leaks through the darkslide slot if direct sunlight strikes it. This happened to me on a beach in bright sunlight, with a fairly new back. I not only use darkslides but continue to block the opening with the removed darkslide under intense lighting conditions. If I need both hands I leave the very end of the darkslide stuck in the slot.
