Radio Trigger, Bronica, and other troubles....

Hi all-

I have a tabletop set up in my home studio and wanted to shoot a fujiroid to look at the lighting as a proof. I don't have any 4x5 fujiroid left, so I'm using an NPC back on a bronica SQ. All goes well until I connect the bronica to a radio slave and try to get them to sync. The profoto heads sputter and fire when connecting the pocket wizard, calm down, then nothing when the shutter is fired. Reposition the cord, plug, everything gets checked and rechecked.....nothing changes. I get a hard-line to sync the main head and the camera, nothing. I change to a different radio trigger...nothing. I did notice two things: 1- When the heads would sputter and discharge whenever initially plugging in the pocket wizard the light would stop blinking green and go to a solid red. 2- I changed camera bodies and new radio triggers for another test a while later, the lights triggered until I unplugged and re-plugged the radio trigger while the trigger was on and the lights, as expected, sputtered and discharged. 3- If the triggers would not fire when the shutter fired on the camera they would still fire manually by press the test button. I've used these lights and triggers for several years and have never had a problem syncing them to my medium format camera, or any other camera. The LF camera taking the hero shot of the set up fires just fine. This is a bit of a head scratcher, any thoughts?!?

Hmmm -- I'm an SQ-A owner, but admit to possibly never having used it with a flash, I generally use continuous 'hot' or the last few years 'cool' lights, but mostly available light outdoors. So the caveat is I'm just speculating here ...

The flash sync contacts are in the lens and conducted through the little gold contacts to the body and thence to the PC connector on the body. So I see the first question as 'have you tried another lens?' There could be something wrong there.

(I also don't own any radio triggers.) Have you/can you try a plain vanilla electronic flash on the body and does it work?

I had thoughts the trigger unit might have a relatively high impedance low current trigger circuit and maybe there is some resistor across the Bronica flash contacts for Zeus knows why that draws enough current to continuously fire the trigger. But a quick ohm meter check with the PS 80mm on my SQ-A shows no leakage through that path.

Are the gold contacts between lens and body clean? Unlikely I think, but some little whisker of metal shorting a contact to its neighbor or the lens barrel?

Is it normal for those trigger units to sputter as you describe when plugging into some other camera gear?

Enh, it's all a plot to keep our minds active and avoid Alzheimers!
Good luck!

The sputtering is relatively normal- its just the intermittent contact of the metal in the connection cables, typically they just discharge, but the sputtering doesn't throw up any red flags for me.
I did have the same lens mounted to another Bronica body on which I have a action winder mounted, as well. The action winder has a hot shoe on the top of the handle and will fire a strobe, I mounted a Nikon hot-shoe strobe to the handle and got nothing when trying to fire it....it may be that specific lens. It is the 100mm f/4 Macro lens, not my fav lens, but a useful one and would hate to never be able to use it in the studio again. May be just the excuse I need to search for the 1:1 macro lens that replaced the one I have now in the Bronica lens line up.

I've used the SQ-A with flash. What Pocket Wizards are you using? If they are the TTL models, I bet they might not work with simple center pin systems.

Just the older regular PWs, I've used them for years on this exact equipment, I just don't have them firing in this instance and not sure why.

Im thinking now that the lens may not be firing the slave. I'm going to get another lens on the body and test out this theory. If that's the case I'll be on the lookout for a new macro lens to replace this one. ---Don't have to ask me twice to spend money on photography....---

I have the PS 110mm f/4.5 1:1 Macro and though I've never tried it with flash, it's a very satisfying hunk of metal and glass!
