I have read all the recent posts on rack and pinion gears. MacMaster and Smallparts will not post outside of america.(why not?) Davall gears in UK are twice the price of everybody else and the fourth suggestion that I have seen on this site only make plastic gears.
Does anybody know of a supplier for rack and pinion of a suitable size, in brass or stee,l for a focussing rack for a 5 x 7 camera who will post to the Falkland Islands?
Somebody must make them, please help!
Norman

Samurai, thanks for the lead, I will try them.
AgX, this is what Smallparts said in their email to me.
"Norman,
Greetings from SmallParts.com!
The width and height of our 24" rack with a 32 Pitch are both 3/16". Price and availability for all of our products can be found on our website. I will include links below for the items you have requested. Unfortunately these items are not currently available for export outside of the USA using our available shipping options. If these products meet your needs you may consider using a freight forwarder to ship them to the Falkland Islands."
I wonder what is so special about a bit of rack and pinion? They could just put it in a cardboard tube and post it.

Norman, if your unable to get your shipment. You could have them shipped to me in Arizona. Then, I could run them down to the nearest UPS store for you. As long as its just gears, I couldn't imagine any reason shipping would be a problem.

Thank you for your offer Tim, I will bear you in mind if I have a problem with another lead that I have. Except it would have to be USPS as UPS don't deliver here.

If you read my original post you will see that I said that McMaster Carr will not post post outside of america.

But they state:
If we are shipping your order outside of the US and Canada, we will ship small parcels via DHL and larger shipments through one of our forwarders.

So, with both cases it must either be something related to your special case (long item to the Falklands), or those sites can't be trusted.

AgX, I emailed McMaster Carr for a quote for the postage and they just stated that they would not post outside of america. They did not offer any alternatives. Do you know the cost of packages sent via DHL? It would make the whole project untenable.

I was just poking around on the USPS website, and they are not going to be exactly cheap.

Do you think its a language terminology thing? Post seems like an odd term to me. Perhaps they think you mean post office like US Postal Service? Perhaps if you asked if they would "ship" to the Falklands?

It could possibly be to do with language, I am English and to me shipping is what you use boats for and living here I do not want it sent by ship. It could take 3 months to get here.
I checked on USPS website and their length limit is, I believe, 37" so my 24" rack should not be a problem. There are many companies that won't post overseas, I wonder why not?
