I am curious rather than coating an emulsion onto a glass plate has anyone ever tried coating onto an optical resin like CR 39? Is it possible to coat onto something like this? wouldn't it be structurally more sensible?

You can coat onto almost anything. Certainly optical resin would be a possibility but glass is extremely cheap less prone to scratching during handling easier to apply a subbing layer etc.

Back in the 70's/80's I coated many different surfaces, glass, paint (cars & vans, signs etc), ceramics even Venetian blinds.

Glass might be cheaper but CR-39 optical resin wont shatter into pieces if you accidentally drop it. Thanks for replying Ian its good to know it is in theory possible.
