I have had problems with excessive contrast on Ilford VC papers, using my Aristo Cold Light head.

I contacted Aristo, and told them about the information on the Ilford site, which details their use of an Aristo W45 lamp and a CC40Y filter ("recommended by Aristo").

Aristo told me that the W45 is a discontinued lamp, which due to limitations of the art at that time (20 years ago) emitted a small amount outside the blue/green portion of the spectrum, and thus required a Color C orrection filter at that time.

Due to advances, their current lamp (the one to which I recently upgraded), the V54, emits light only in the blue/green portion of the spectrum (no Red), and thus requires no compensation.

Aristo asked me about the age of my Ilford Filters, suggesting that my filters (aquired used) might have been manufactured to match the older W45 lamp, rather than the newer V45 lamp. Aristo also pointed out that over time, filters can become discolored.

1) Your current datasheet (see link above) is out of date with respect to this one issue.

2) If I purchase a new set of Ilford VC filters, will they work correctly with the modern blue/green-only lamp made by Aristo ? In other words, will I get a #2 effect, with a #2 filter ?

3) If I use Ilford graded papers, will they respond "normally" with the current lamps made by Aristo ?

Many thanks - and thanks for being here !!

Ken,
I replaced the old lamp (W45) on my cold light head (Zone VI) with the new V54 lamp, and have not had any difficulty controlling contrast using the current Ilford variable contrast filters and printing on Ilford neutral and warmtone papers. I don't use a color correction filter with the new lamp. The new lamp is also brighter, allowing shorter exposure times with bigger enlargements. You might need to add a neutral density filter for smaller enlargements if the times are too short and you don't want to stop down the lens past its optimal aperture. Hope this helps.
