question about kodak-d76

Hello Apuggers,
i have just prepared 5 litres of kodak D-76 (first time i'm using powder).
I have noticed that, after mixing powder with hot water, the resulting liquid has a brown/red colour. I bought D-76 two years ago and have thoroughly followed mixing instructions.
Is that colouring ok ?

Geez, I dont know. I never pay attention to the color when I mix D-76, I store it in dark colored bottles, it appears clear when I decant what I need for use. I think it may be a case of the color clearing after the solution cools. Anyone else know? I have some packets that are 5 or 6 years old and never noticed when mixing.

How was the powder before you mixed it? If it's gone bad --oxidized by being exposed to air via a tear in the package,etc. , it will sometimes discolour from its normal white-ish tint.

Mine mixes clear all the time, FWIW.

Never had brown-red colour from d76... I suspect it is oxidized.

As usual, if there is a doubt, don't use it for important stuff ; test test test!

D76 should mix up very clear/water white. What's the best before date on the package. You could test it, but don't expect miracles. How hot was the water? If above the max temp on the package, that could cause problems as well if you used tap water.

Sounds like one or both of the developing agents Metol & Hydroquinone have oxidised, it shouldn't have and colour at all. Test it with some unimportant film, but it may be useless.

Is the pouch a plastic/foil laminate, or a paper/foil laminate? The paper/foil laminate had problems with not maintaining an air-tight seal, and was replaced.

I haven't checked the expiry date but when i did it (two years ago) i remember it was ok. Can was well closed. Powder colour before mixing was not white. It had a very light brown cast. Water temperature was a bit hot (55 degrees. Tha maximum recommended for mixing).

The D-76 had a almost transaparent colour. I developed a Fuji Neopan 400 and it was ok.
However the liquid has a very light brown cast.

If the d76 was in a can rather than a foil/paper pouch, it must be very old. Kodak has not put chemicals in cans since, oh, gosh, the late 1960s, I would guess.

I'moretty sure the can was not so old (1960s). I noticed it had "European" references on it (Litres instead of gallons". Maybe it has been specifically produced for the European market
