Question about 8mm and 16mm analog motion pictures please.....

Can anyone pls just point me in the right direction so I may learn about 8mm and 16mm video photography, i.e., Films, where to buy, how to develop, etc.... starting from scratch...

There is a forum for cinematography at http://www.cinematography.com/, including a sub-forum for films and processing. Presumably they also have video discussions but if I read your question right, you are looking for info on actual motion picture film (not video, digital or otherwise).

did you mean 8mm and 16mm FILM cameras ?
they are sold on eBoi and don't cost very much.
i have had and used bolex ( with switar lenses )
the b8, b8l, h8 and h16 cameras, and i had a lot of fun with them

if you google bolex, or 8mm or 16mm film
you will find a ton of info on those cameras
( i don't know much about the reveres or any of the other makers, sorry )

you can still get film and get it processed
i always used http://www.prepfilm.com
he sells 8mm ( super and double ) and 16mm and will have it processed for you as well,
he's a nice guy too

if it is a video camera you are asking about,
can't help you much there ...
you might be able to find VHS cameras for not too much money somewhere near you.
they tend to be VERY bulky, hold a tape either in the camera or in thing the camera
is cabled to and they weigh as much as a small child.
i was recently gifted one, it was beautiful but i donated it to a local art-metropolis ...

the bolex cameras are some of the best,
the cameras and lenses may be inexpensive these days but
it still costs a small fortune to feed'em ..

Video is an analog electrical process and should be welcome here. Consumer Digital Video started around the time of the Sony Hi8 camcorder, in the late 80s.

Thanks guys, that'll get me going. And yes, I was speaking of 8mm Film cameras.... To me is almost all the same, just a different fps and method of viewing final frames.

Now that I have my father's super 8 camera, I would love to see more discussion of film moviemaking on APUG. I have no idea even what emulsions are available in super 8 and whether they are expensive.

A roll of 64T, Plus-X, or Tri-X runs about $15-20 roll. Last time I tried I was still able to send color through Walmart pretty cheap. Black & white cost more and more effort to get developed.

Some color negative and other stocks are also available.

Playing with motion picture film has never been cheap but it is fun. I have my grandfather's 16mm home movies going back to the early 30's. Once color started showing up in the films they would go back and forth between color and black & white. My father said he kept going back to black & white because color was too darn expensive. (I doubt he said darn )

I''m sure if it's me or not, but it is really recently that "Everything old is new again"
Now there is a huge fad going on, I'd call it a mad rush, for this equipment, as wedding photographers are now offering this as an elite hand made service, i.e.., shooting with a 8MM on their wedding. And you know what, I'm watching some of the footage and it's pretty darn neat.....

Oh, and frankly, I think it blows the heck outta the 1080p HD in the digi SLRs now.....
The big two mfrs, really counted on the DLSR Still and video for wedding sector to take off...... I wonder what they think of this..... I get a lil' giggle.....

But do posts in the social groups show up as new posts when I click on the number of new posts in the upper right hand corner? I'm not going to go to the trouble of clicking through the social groups looking for new posts.

I agree. I don't think the social groups are terribly well integrated into the forum, but as it is, it's the software we've got for user-generated forums.

Another case of "everything old is new" - I have a young cousin-in-law who is working on a video production degree and has recently discovered motion picture film. Now he wants to buy an Arriflex 16mm.
