Hi. Can someone please advise me on the optimum enlarging lens focal length for printing 6x7 negs? Thanks.

Mike

youllneed an 80mm lens at least for medium format, preferably a 90mm. 50mm wont cut it.

You will need a 90 or longer unless you make only small enlargements. For example a "good quality" Schneider Componon-S 80mm lens has good coverage only for 60x60mm negatives you get to the 5 to 10x range.

I believe that there is a pile of stuff on this topic on this forum and others. If you go by the recommendations, then 90mm is the minimum for 6x7. However, there are not that many 90mm lenses out there, mostly 80mm (for 6x6) or 105mm (for 6x7). If you look at the spec sheet for many 80mm lenses, like the Schneider Componon-S (which I have) then it's only really specified up to 6x6. However, other spec sheets for 80mm lenses (I think the Rodagons but I could be mistaken) suggest it's fine for 6x7. Personally I use an 80mm on 6x7 for up to 12"x16" prints and find it fine, and many others do too. If you want to do it by the book, then find a 90mm or 105mm, though you might find yourself limited on the maximum size on the baseboard with 105mm compared with 80mm.

Top quality enlarging lenses are so cheap secondhand these days you could find a good 80mm and try it. It's possible you may see a difference on a side by side comparison between an 80mm and a 105mm but I doubt it. With 6x7 material there are other considerations such as film flatness to worry about that would probably mask any effect of lens focal length.

It depends on the specific lens. From the manufacturer's web sites:

El Nikkor 80mm 6x7
Componar-S 105mm
Componon-S 100mm
Rogonar-S 90mm
Rodagon 80mm
Apo-Rodagon 80mm

I'd better correct myself before someone elase does! 80mm Rodagon is specified up to 6x7, There is a 90mm Rogonar-S for 6x7. 105mm is the standard for 6x9. Schneider Componon-S 80mm is only specified up to 6x6 while the componon-s 100 is ok for 6x9. I figure 80mm is close enough to 90mm to not keep me awake at night.

El Nikkor 80mm 6x7
Componar-S 105mm
Componon-S 100mm
Rogonar-S 90mm
Rodagon 80mm
Apo-Rodagon 80mm

The list is correct.
And indeed flatness is in 6x7cm already an important factor. I am using a Rodenstock Rodagon 4,0/80mm for my 6x7cm (effectivly 56mmx69mm) negatives. In 40x50cm a little bit vignetting in the top of the corners so you have to close the aperture at least 3F stops.

Thanks to all for your responses. I already have the Rodagon 80/4 which has given me excellent results with 645. I've just made my first few prints from 67 negs with it and the results seem to be equally good; that's enlarging up to 30x40cm.

Thanks again

Mike
