I've been looking for this info and can't find it. I am sure someone out there is doing it and can give me some insite.

I have coming 1 gallon tanks and steel racks to develop my 8x10 film in. As I wait for the slow boat, I have been reading. I want to do semi stand development using Pyrocat HD but want to avoid surge marks. I know there will be a learning curve but I want a place to start.

Will I have to worry about surge marks with pyrocat HD and semi stand dev.

What are your methods for avoiding this problem?

I would recommend contacting Steve Sherman. He's doing a lot of sheet film and reduced agitation techniques with pyro developers. He offers workshops too.

If you're using deep tanks and stainless racks, you will have to worry about surge marks. The trick is to be as gentle and methodical as possible. Frankly I don't recommend it as Pyrocat HD is not replenishable and oxidizes rapidly once mixed to working strength. You'll be brewing up several gallons of chemistry to process a few sheets of film and then dumping it. You'd be better off making up some BTZS type tubes or tray processing single sheets at a time.
