You mean the guy was an iceplantaphobe, too? Gosh, now I have no respect for him at all!

From time to time my fingernails are a near black purple color from using amidol in print developement.

That's not a very healthy thing to do, either. While black fingernails may be the badge of a "real" photographer, nitrile gloves probably represent the better part of valor. Certainly for what they cost, which is virtually nothing.
