Purchasing Step Wedges

Hi - I wish to purchase a couple of Stoufler 21 step wedges for transmission and reflection measurements. I have tried emailing the company without getting a reply and there seems to be no secure eshop on their website.

I am in the UK, can anyone suggest somewhere that can supply these items through an online order. I don't really want to send my credit card details through email.

hello,i've bought mine from silverprint,the Agfa one's.if you need that make i only know of one supplier,View camera shop.i have bought of these company in the past with no problems(and i'm based in Wales.)

A bit off topic, but since Stouffer wedges were made using Tech Pan film, I wonder what they are going to do now?

They are stocked in the US by the Photographers Formulary.

Forget Stouffer. They have hopeless and terrible customer service (I have heard plenty of horror stories similar to your experience). I ordered mine less than 6 months ago from the Photo Fomulary. They have excellent customer service and responsiveness. I am in Canada and I received the wedge and some chemicals I ordered within a week. Brillliant!

I played phone tag with Stouffer's for awhile and then purchased from Photographer's Formulary or The View Camera Store without problems.

Richard. Are they all the 21 step wedges? I have often thought of trying to calibrate my colour head for dual filtration using the Paul Butzi method and he uses a 31 step wedge.

OK I realise that a 21 step will also do it but I am unsure of what changes I'd need to make and whether with a 21 step wedge the graphs will be as accurate?

They are the 21-step ones; we'll be shipping them with new Analysers and ZoneMasters in place of the home-brewed test negs we used to use, but also selling them on their own. The price isn't fixed yet but will be a bit higher than Stouffer's list I'm afraid as the shipping costs are huge, wiping out our dealer discount, and we'll have to add VAT and import duty :rolleyes:.

I haven't looked at Paul Butzi's method for a long time so off the top of my head I can't say by how much (if anything) accuracy would be affected by using a 21-step (half stop) instead of 31-step (third stop). Rather than working through Paul's method to get a constant exposure from grade to grade, I know the f-stop exposure time adjustment I need when changing from one grade to another and use that instead.

As luck would have it, I just last week received a direct-ordered Stouffer 4x5 31-step calibrated transmission wedge from them. It's true they have no web site sales, and due to a strange set of circumstances I was unable to phone them directly (my issue, not theirs). So I emailed them the order. I concealed my credit card info by embedding it into a small bitmap image file which I attached to my email. They received it, figured it out nicely, and promptly sent me my wedge. It arrived about five or six business days later via UPS. This was exactly the proper delay for the distance it was shipped.

The only quirk in the transaction was that they never acknowledged my email, so I didn't realized everything had worked out until the package arrived. Other than that everything went perfect.
