We finally did it. The 'Murray@uptowngallery fever' has gripped us. We just bought this absolutely huge Thornton Pickard focal plane shutter on a well known auction site. 12 1/2 inches square, with a film opening of 7 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. And it wasn't too expensive either. Uhmm, that is, if you compare it to the Linny focal plane shutter for 4x5" that went last week for well over $1000.

We hope to build an 8x10 camera around it (yet another project), inspired as we are by the genius use of 3D tripod heads as demonstrated by one of our other members (what's his name again?). Been dipping our feet in the 8x10 size for a while now, but this thing made us plunge in head first.

Of course, we realize this will be a biggish project that will not be finished anytime soon with another project just added our workload, but the idea of being able to shoot 8x10 with any old barrel lens was just too appealing to let this one pass. Can't wait to hear the sound of this shutter going 'click-swoosh-clack' -or whatever it will sound like.

We'd better change our names to 'focal plane fiends' or the likes. Medform-norm doesn't seem to apply much longer.

(Hopefully we didn't outbid anyone here...)

Any recommendations for a nice lens to go with the project?
