I have used HIE for quite a while now but have always processed it by hand in deep tanks. The negs always looked good no pinholes. Recently I tried to process in my JOBO ATL1000 and I am getting lots of pin holes. Has anyone else had this problem processing HIE in a JOBO? Could it be the continuous agitation from the rotary processing?

I have mostly used this film in 35mm without any problems but recently I got 5 rolls of 120 from davidromano.com to try and all 5 came out with these pin holes. It's very frustrating as I handled the film very carefully.

This film is the cut down 70mm from davidromano.com I have used this film for a long time now and not had a problem till now.

Peter when you developed your 120 HIE did you agitate a lot. What method do you use, developer, temperature?

I used Rodinal 1:25 (as I do with 35mm HIE without any problems) at 20 degrees. Agitation was 5 seconds each minute.

If you used an acid stop (like Kodak Indicator stop bath) change to a water stop, and your pinholes might disappear. I had a similar problem with lith film , and a change to a water stop cured the problem.

I have always used water as my stop bath so the pin holes are still a mystery.

Comments and observations on HIE pinholes

Had the pinhole problem on 2 rolls of HIE 35mm recently. One I tried water stop & pre-wetting. Had no beneficial effect.
Called Kodak. Said acid stop would not be problem (I use D76, non-carbonate developer according to them).
K said the em numbers I was using had not generated any other pinhole complaints but suggested that storage at other than subambient temps. could lead to some interaction between the film base rear surface and the emulsion surface that is in contact with it. The rolls in question had had a month or two outside the cold storage and been around the Caribbean so, at least in my case, this is a plausible explanation. FTR I just ran a workshop on IR photography, the students exposed and processed 12 rolls of HIE bought within the last day or two and processed a day after shooting: no pinholes.
Hope this helps someone.
PS I'm sending some samples to Kodak for their comments.

Dave,

Did you hear anything back from Kodak about your samples? I bought (from B&H), shot and processed a 35mm roll in Xtol (pre-soak, water stop) in the last month and had holes all over the place. Quite frustrating given the cost of film and anticipation of the negatives. Had some otherwise very nice shots.
