problems with a Coolscan 4000

Hi

I have just recieved a Coolscan 4000 which I bought. I can't however coax it to scan.

It powers on, and makes the right sounds but I get an error when trying to start Nikon Scan 4.0.2

Nikon scan was unable to find any devices

Presently I also have an LS-IV ED which is working fine this way (although its USB)

• I know that the LS-4000 is a firewire device, and I have a firewire card in my computer (which is using windows 2000 and has 2 gig of memory).
• I am able to use my Epson 4990 using that firewire card and the same cable.
• Interestingly when I plug in the Epson 4990 an icon for imaging device appears in Device Manager but I do not see such when plugging in the Nikon
• The unit powers up and accepts film into the SA-21 film holder

Since the scanner came with nothing is there some additional driver which I need to obtain and install? Web searching has not yeilded significant assistance, and so I post here.

LS 4000 with FireWire??? Are you really sure? AFAIK the 35mm scanners from Nikon never had a FireWire, only the 8000 and 9000 series.

Soooo, chances are high you are using a USB port. If you run it via a hub it should be a hub with an external power supply - without it your problems appears to be similar to mine long time ago.

And download VueScan from http://www.hamrick.com - it comes with all drivers you need. If VueScan shouldn't recognize the scanner, you might have a hardware problem.

I have tried using both the Nikon and an Epson on a computer which it had not been installed (yes, the Epson 4990 is also firewire and USB). Vuescan could not access either. I will install the drivers for the Epson and I'm sure that vuescan'll probably recognise the Epson

Nope, no need for a Nikon driver if you use VueScan. But what about your W2K system - does it have a good driver installed? I remember that not all cards work with all devices, and not all drivers work with all cards...<sigh>

thanks for that link, I downloaded the ZIP and have (tried) to installed it. No go yet.

I tested with vuescan and it couldn't see the Nikon. As a decades long IT person I feel (intuitively) that everything needs a driver, so I thought "bugger it" and used drivesnapshot to take my system back to before I installed my 4990 (luckilly that's just a few weeks ago).

From this state vuescan would not see it. Importantly (I think) when I plugged the Epson in, the "plug and play" bits recognized something and tried to identify and install drivers (it gave up and asked for help) I then installed the Epson software and then rebooted.

Now vuescan can see my Epson scanner (where it could not before).

Since this scanner came with no software I suspect that it is a driver issue.

well, this is all that comes with the installation CD: the driver you've downloaded plus the NikonScan. Now that you have the driver and VueScan (which installs its own driver anyway) it appears to me you are having a hardware problem somewhere in the interface(s) or cable.

After you've unzipped the file you can point Windoze to the driver - wherever it's located on your hard drive - Windoze only scan certain areas of your drive.

I'd contact the seller and squeeze him for answers, really.

indeed, that's pretty much what I did

already done ... I've noticed this morning that there is evidence of a drop in its history. Packaging was excellent so the scuff on the back and the bent screw mount points are not from transport. It smells of "fraud" if you ask me. Certainly it is not in the "excellent condition" which the auction text indicated. However coming from the USA it will represent hassle to return it.

I'll contact JAS in Helsinki to get it inspected there.
