problem with Scans

Hi all
Just joined DPUG, Happy New Year to all. Looking for some help regarding scanning.

I use a Plustek with Silverfast software, I scanned some 35mm negs today and was surprised to discover some strange objects on the scans, I've attached an example. Can anyone advise me what's gone wrong?

Welcome.

Never seen anything like that. My guess is file or data corruption at some stage of the process. You could try VueScan to see if it's an issue with the scanner or with Silverfast.

Looks like you had something like ICE/FARE (or even a dust and scratch software removal option) engaged and it got confused. Not uncommon. Additionally, you possibly were also using a film that was not rated to be compatible with an infrared channel function like ICE/FARE. Those are some quick thoughts based on the limited information you gave us.

Bit more detail for you. I use the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai c/w Silverfast 8 software. I was scanning Ilford HP5 negs using Autopilot in Silverfast and had selected print as the output. I've been scanning my negs for about 15 months now and this is the first time I've experienced this type of problem.

Problem solved! Sometimes it does help to check the manufacturers website, Doug hit the nail on the head! Activating the infrared based scratch and dust removal (iSRD / ICE) for black&white negatives causes artefacts. The silver halide emulsion of black&white negatives blocks the infrared beam, SilverFast cannot use it for correcting defects. When scanning B&W you have to deactivate iRSD.
