We tried to put a roll of film in to the XG-M that I'd bought my nephew but had no luck whatsoever and now the film winder appears to be broke as it has no tension at all when you try to wind it on and the camera will not fire either ? Any advice ?

The camera needs good batteries to fire the shutter, won't wind unless the shutter has been released. Is the rewind button on the bottom of the camera stuck in? Sometimes jiggling the auto-winder coupling on the bottom of the camera with a coin or screwdriver can free things up.
