Problem with Battery Adaptor for Gossen Lunasix 3

I have just purchased from B&H a GO4145 battery adaptor for my Gossen Lunasix 3.. it has come with SR44 batteries - but it does not fit!!.

I am trying to communicate and explain to B&H but being in Australia it is proving difficult and taking days.

The kit is designed for a Luna Pro S.. but my searching suggests it is the same as Lunasix 3 - but maybe not. The problem is the batteries stick up outside of the holder and I cannot close the battery cover. Any ideas from anyone please to help with this problem. Thanks

IIRC, the SR44 batteries should fit completely within the adapter. Yours seen to be sticking up above the lip.
Is there something stuck in the adapter? Are you sure the batteries are in the right way?

Yes - that is the problem.. and I have tried them both ways..... I just cannot get the lid screwed down...

I had one of those in a grey Luna Pro (the Lunasix 3 is called Luna Pro in the USA) and it worked fine, the lid screwed all the way down. I use it in a Luna Pro S (Lunasix 3s) now.

In your photo, the batteries look to be upside down (I think).

Yes - 1.55/v silver oxide - came with the adaptor from B&H

I have the exact same kit for my Lunasix 3s (same as the 3 from a battery/adapter point of view). First off, the plus side of the SR-44 is inserted up (visible after insertion). After inserting the batteries into the adapter, the battery stack is sticking out roughly 1.8mm. Putting the adapter with batteries into the meter, pressing down against the spring contact gets the top of the battery to about the middle of the threaded area.

Thankyou very much Plumerl... GOT IT!!.. I was not pressing down hard enough - quite a bit of force needed.. and it only half closes but is OK. And as Matt King suggested earier - I did have my batteries upside down.

Hello Gracie - I did not believe it fitted until Matt above said it was correct.. I just kept trying and trying and finally got it screwed in... and it is now working perfectly. I have to admit I am reluctant when it is due for a change of battery.. but I can assure you it will fit and it will work!!

Likely the problem is pressing hard AND finding the thread start.
In this case one should twist the cap in reverse until it snaps and only then twist it the right way.

Yes, that is the best way to avoid cross threading the cap which would result in a bigger problem.

I finally got the thing to fit today, only to find out the meter's off by a couple stops, at least compared to my Minolta SLR and phone. I don't know if I should get it repaired or just compensate via ISO but at least I got the adapter working.

First, meters will vary in the angle in which they measure light. So you have to eliminate that variable. Second, camera light meters often apply some level of "intelligence" to the meter reading, while the gossen is a straight "average" reading. Third, do you know your Minolta meter and phone meter are correct? (I've been unable to find an android phone light meter that works well, but would love suggestions.)

Which doesn't mean that your Gossen is not actually off by a couple of stops, but need to eliminate other variables.

Yeah, I think you're right. My phone and Minolta generally agree with one another, but I think over the weekend I'm going to try the meter in a few different situations.

Well done on persevering with the battery Gracie... as I said before it took me some great effort. I am far from expert and after some 40+ years I am getting back into B&W film but with a renewed vigour and deep interest in the science and process etc. If you have not yet read Ansel Adams excellent trilogy of Camera, Negative and Print - if your interest is in improved knowledge of process then I can highly recommend. In the negative book he touches on his Zone system (which I have as a separate book and again recommend) and the previsualisation process. As far as I can ascertain as long as your meter is consistent then it's "accuracy" or comparison to other meters is of no great concern. He emphasizes testing film and development - ie not to take the ASA value as accurate since in your situation it may in fact be off by a stop or two.

And the other key comments are that meters of all persuasions are designed to provide an average light reading equal to a gray tone - it is more about knowing where to place the full black and full white in your images.

I think I have all that correct - just wanted to share that the meter is really just a guide or start point.

I have two of those adapters, one in my LunaPro (US version of Lunasix 3), the other in my Canon 814AZ. Both with SR44s, no trouble with closing the battery case covers.

But if closing the battery case cover is a real problem, consider using SR43/386 cells instead of SR44/357s. SR43s are the same diameter, same voltage, and a little thinner. Lower capacity, though, so shorter life.

While the Adams books are good there are a couple more suited to roll film or
explain the zone system in easier(for me) to understand terms.
Picker's Zone VI manual/Zakia & Todds book(don't remember title) and if
you can deal with similar exposure methods not called "Zone System" just about
any photo how to book covers it.
