... and I live too far from a city to drive to. I know I can order from B&H or Freestyle or... but I need it yesterday, know what I mean?

I really like what dilution H did for Tri-X, but all I have on hand is D76. I was unimpressed with Tri-x when I developed it before in D76. I have called every photographer I know within 30 miles and they've all unloaded their film stuff for digital.

Can anyone tell me something about Tri-x/D76 that will make it look grand? (I'm kicking myself for shooting Tri-x for something important and urgent, when I knew I was out of HC110.)

Thanks.

Janet

What about D76 don't you like?

Have you tried higher dilutions and longer processing times?

I used it years ago diluted 1+1 and got some results I realy liked. I just followed Kodak's instructions IIRC. 11 minutes at 68 F runs in my mind. TRI X has changed in the meantime, but not much I think. Can't you do a test roll? Shoot it all of the same subject and develop short pieces at different conditions until you get what you want. Somewhere along the line you should find a condition that closely resembles HC110.

>>>What about D76 don't you like?>>>

I used dilution H with less agitation with the HC110. Seems the gradation from light to shadow was smoother and prettier than when I used D76.

I've only tried that using D76 with a TMax film. I didn't get the same good results as with the HC110/Tri-x combination. Too many variables changed, though.

PHmaster, tell me about your agitation, using D76/Tri-x. What time did you use? I know mine might need to differ.

Thanks, all!

Janet

Take a look at the APUG gallery of Wallace Rollins, you can find it (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

He inspired me to by some 35mm Tri-X and D-76 this morning. Obviously it's a combo that can work. Best. Shawn

Shawn, thanks so much for the link. Wow! His are nice. I don't think D76 is my problem.

D76 1+1 would be my next choice for Tri-X after HC 110. I am just too lazy to mix the D76 powder and it would probably go bad on me.

John, thank you! It looks very interesting. I'm bookmarking it (and figuring out how to get all the text into English. I got the tables.)

I know this is stating the obvious, but if it's really important, don't risk a new developer or developing technique without a test. I speak from experience!

You can dilute D76 1+3, i seem to remember. With reduced agitation that will probably get you close to what you're looking for.

You're welcome, Wallace's work is excellent... I thought it was interesting that I went out and bought some Tri-X and D-76 this morning and almost immediately saw this thread.

Absolutely, shoot an other role or two and test the development before you process the important one.

Now that's interesting. Tri-X in D-76 and it didn't work for you? I've used HC-110, TMax, ID-11, XTOL, and yes even Rodinal with Tri-X. All these developers work well with Tri-X, but the only one I though was "better" is XTOL, though not by much.

Tri-X in D-76 1+1, 10 minutes at 68F with agitation for the first 30 seconds, then 5 seconds each 30 seconds for the remainder. Prints fine anywhere from grade 2 to grade 3 depending on the lighting at exposure time.

I didn't mean to say it didn't work. I like HC110 better. Or maybe it's the different technique I used.
