I'm interested in getting into panoramic photography, and am wondering what kind of enlarger is needed to make prints from pano negatives (for example negs from an Xpan or 6x17 camera)? I currently have an Omega C760, the largest negative it can take is 6x7. Will I need a 4x5 enlarger to print pano negs? Are there negative carriers made for panoramic negs?

Thanks,
Dale

you neen an enlarger that the negs will fit into. for the xpan, you need a medium format like the beseler 23 series or the omega you have. for 6x17, a 5x7 is the best option but I believe there are those using modified neg holders in some 4x5 enlargers. (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I print Xpan and 6x12 using a 4x5 glass carrier and masks made out of black art board although now I have one of those handy 4 blade masking stages for my LPL 4550XLG.

Your C760 should be fine for Xpan negatives, assuming you can buy or make a suitable negative carrier. Looking around the web now I see that there is a glass sandwich carrier available for the C760; that would do the trick.

As Vinny says, 6x17 really wants a 5x7" enlarger, which will be a big beast compared to your C760.

Thank you for the helpful information. Oren, do you know where you saw a glass carrier for the C760 that will handle Xpan negatives?

There's also an LPL 4x5 enlarger for sale nearby, price is a bit high, but I might be looking into that..

The 760 is a 6X7(cm) machine and won't give even(any?) coverage for a neg 17cm wide

If you are serious (even for fun) about printing then go for the LPL that is near you. You will enjoy your time in the darkroom a lot more. I, like PKM-25, use a Saunders LPL 4550 to print 6x12 with a glass carrier. It is a great machine, head and shoulders above your Omega.

Create digital negs from the original negs to the size that you want the final print size and then contact print them.

So clearly 6x17 is out of the question with my C760 enlarger. But what is the size of the Xpan negatives? Same height as 35mm (36mm high), but how wide?

The 4.5 enlarger near me is an LPL 4500-II, and is about 2-3 hours away. They're asking $500, but might be a good investment for me, even if I never shoot large format.

24mmx65mm

XPan negative size is 24mm x 56mm
WideLux negative size is 24mm x 58mm

What type of camera gives a 6x12 negative? That sounds interesting...

I had an Xpan negative carrier made for my Beseler 23C. I sent SK Grimes a regular 35mm carries (24x36mm) and they machined it out to 24x56mm:
