Print Exchange

Not sure if an attempt has been made for an Australian based print exchange.
Just testing the water to see if there is enough interest to organise such an exchange.

Possible 'Australian' PRINT EXCHANGE

Greetings All;
I have just received my 9 prints from 'The Large Format Print Exchange ,2010'
This is how it runs :- Members make say 10 identical prints, these are mailed to the 'co-ordinator' who , when the first 10 parcels arrive, opens them up and then places one print into each pile, which in turn is then wrapped-up and posted back to each of the group members. So in effect you receive 9 new images in your return parcel, great:
Now for some rules , each image must be 'unounted' and say 8" x10" in size, this makes the parcel size more manageable and reduces the postal cost.
By selecting a padded postal bag it may be possible to re-use the same bag / packet for the return of the exchange images. Postal costs may vary across Australia ? The Co-ordinator must have the 'time to process all images received AND visit a Post Office to 'Mail the return images '.How the 'return postage amount is calculated and paid to be determined,etc These are some of the items to sort out, (B T W the reason for 10 Images is for one image to be donated to the Co-ordinator for his time and trouble.).

depending on the format and timing (I never commit to something I can't do!), I might be interested.

I do like how the LF print exchange works however due to the likely numbers, some changes might need to be implemented. The LF one worked on a FIFO (first in first out) basis but that requires enough participants that there are multiple groups. We might be better off having a sign-up period and the list of participants is split into reasonable sized groups (may just be one group!). The LF exchange worked this way previous years. This way you send the right number of prints.

I'm interested. I don't like too many rules when it comes to format and medium. 8x10 print size is reasonable guidance but apart from that I think anything should go!

Don't see anywhere in the thread that says it's for LF shooters.


I suggest
- keeping it to 8x10 for postage and participation purposes (more people likely to participate if the prints aren't monsters)
- Any format film
- Traditional prints only, can be FB, RC, alternative process, lab produced


If you want to avoid having an organiser, just run a exchange on the same basis that other ones get run here (or used to.. I haven't done one for awhile) where you have small groups and send the prints (3-4) direct. Costs more in postage but simpler.

if we only permit traditional prints that are commercially produced then I'm out...ALL the local labs I use are in the process of phasing out their "wet" labs, and are doing all their printing on "dry (inkjet)" labs.

Based on my experience I actually prefer the inkjet prints as I get the colors I'm expecting, not the color the printer thinks I want..

I scan all my color work because thats how labs work now - they don't print optically....and I can't afford to get 10 prints done at a custom lab that still prints color using a enlarger just to share....

I would agree traditional prints only. This is APUG, self or lab printed. Might get a couple into the darkroom. Don't have an enlarger. send to a lab. larger neg. contact print.

Please tell me again how this works. Do we do 10 prints of the same neg and send them to one person to distribute, or do we do 10 prints from 10 different negs and send those. I'm a little slow with these things?

Mike, it's usually 10 prints the same, bit i've heard of people sending a few different images as a submission. I've always sent 10 of the same print.

I think we need to get firmish commitments to see how many people will participate. No good saying groups of 10 if only 5 put their hands up!

So, I'll change my 'maybe' to a yes, I'm in!

You can count me in regardless of what is decided with commercial printing....given enough time I can send the negs off for printing....

Any one have any thoughts on a different size - postcard(6x4) or 5x7? Just a thought
