Preparing Stock Developer ID-11

I am new to APUG and to developing my own film. I am using ID-11. I was reading that to make the Stock solution I needed to mix the powders with 3.75L of water around 104F/40C.

My question is how credical is that water temperature. I know I can not do it with cold water but what if the water is hotter then 104F? Do I need to regulate the water to the exact temp?

No need for a precision thermometer

No precision is needed. The temperature of 40 C is recommended so the chemicals dissolve faster, but 35 to 45 will do fine.

You can feel the water temperature by hand. If you feel it warm, it is OK. The hand starts to feel a slight burning sensation at 50 C or so. Your body temp is 36 C approximately.

You can get an approximate temp by mixing 3 parts of water at ambient temperature with 1 part of just boiled water.

Thank you. This is what I thought, but felt I should ask before diving head first and messing something up. I was trying to use a thermometer to try and get the water right at 40C. I will try mixing the stock solution now. Again thank you.

What I do is this, put 750 ml of water (I make 1 liter) in a jug, put a piece of paper on top of it (so nothing falls in there) and put it in the microwave.

After approx. 45 secs, I take it out and measure the temperature. Then put it back in the oven for 5 seconds and measure again, and keep going at 5 sec intervals.

After 3 or 4 cycles you can get the water at 40 C, spot on.

Precise temperature is not very important in this case, but if you need water at spot on temp, you can do it this way.

Mmmmm. does useing iradiated water to dev your film give your prints more of a glow?
