Does anybody know of a relible source to have pre-AINikkors AI'd.I have a few and are worried to wreck my D800 with them.

I know, i have some pre-AI lenses. They are used as they are intended to be -- on film camera bodies (wink wink).
Jokes aside, instead of AI modification you can just buy a Nikon F ->> Canon EF adapter and use a Canon EF-mount full-frame d!git4l camera.
PS: In fact some of my favorite lenses are pre-AI:
Nikkor-S 50mm f1.4
Nikkor-S 58mm f1.4
Nikkor-PC 35mm f3.5
... i also had a Nikkor-Q 200mm f4.0 that had excellent bokeh, just amazing. But it had some chromatic aberration problems. I replaced it with the Nikkor 200/4.0 AI which is an excellent lens, it is so good it should be labeled as a Canon lens
and i've added a Nikkor 135/3.5 AI which is a sleeper. Best tele i've owned is the Canon EF 85/1.8, which is close to a perfect lens.
Good to know he is still doing this. I have had several modified by him, very satisfied.

The Pre-AI lens would hit the AI meter coupling on the D800. Lower end cameras like D5300 or D3300 don't have this coupling so it's safe to mount pre AI lenses on them.
I had him do one a number of years ago. His conversions came back with f-stops printed on a tape attached to aperture ring (for viewing in the prism). I didn't think the tape would last long but it did.

O.K. That makes sense. I use mine on a D3200 with no problems.
The internet had conflicting advice. Even a couple of Nikon sites couldn't agree!

If the lens is in collector condition milling the ring reduces it to good user USD.
If it is good user already there is no loss or some gain.
If the OEM conversion ring is still available and the lens is in nice condition you need to keep both rings.

Yeah, this is the same thing that came up when I had mine milled. Not only are mine user grade, but in my opinion, there are so many lenses out there that I don't need to worry. Plus, my cameras and lenses are tools, and if I need to modify them to work better for me, so be it.
I kind of agree with you here. If I need to use the lens on say the D800 I think I would buy the AI version of the lenses. I don't think they are that expensive and I don't think they are inferior to the pre AI lenses either.
