Pre flashing X-Ray film

Hi

Recently, I exposed 11x14 X-Ray film. It was contrasty a lot. I read somewhere that pre-flashing the film before the real exposure reduce contrast. What is your procedure? 4-5 stops underexposition, out of focus? Is it important to pre flash the film in the same scene you want take a picture? What's about
the out of focus? Do you use a frosted plexiglas, a soft focus filter.

Any advice appreciated.

The xray film I've used hasn't need that. It needed some experimentation in terms of exposure and development. Once I had that figured out, it made normal contrast negatives.

Pre-flashing film can be accomplished in many ways. A grey card, diffusion material,or a through a styrofoam coffee cup. The goal is to expose the film to an even light source, usually on Zone II or III. It can be done at the site, or as news photographers of the flashbulb era, in the darkroom prior to loading the holders.

I think I'd try more exposure and less development first, before more elaborate measures like pre-flashing.
