I've been pre-flashing to bring dense highlights under control and it works well for me. Is there any reason or advantage to post-flashing as opposed to flashing the paper before making the main exposure? Thanks,

No. Keep doing what you are doing. Pre-flashing is helpful for both film and paper.

I heard (somewhere) that there is some difference between pre and post flashing, although I can't see how it would matter. FWIW, I rarely pre-flash an entire sheet of paper, tending mainly to selectively flash as part of the burn/dodge routine. If your method works, that's great.
