A card from Luis-F-S landed in my mail box several days ago. A nicely printed detail of a "Clematis Bush". I am impressed that you were able to reduce an 8x10 negative to a 4x5 print. The information insert noted that this was your Round 50 contribution, but my notes indicate that I received a card from you in Round 50. I assume that this is your Round 51 contribution.

Regards,
Darwin

Edit: My mistake. The card that Luis-F-S ant to me in June 2020 was for Round 49, not Round 50. I look forward to his Round 51 card.

I received bedrof's beautiful Olive Trees lith print. Trees from Montenegro, Agfa Brovira paper. Wow, where did you get that? Excellent postcard, and yes, I like it. Thanks Ilya!
Mark, I'm delighted to know that the card got to you.
I stumbled at our local "craigslist" upon two half-empty 50x60 cm, 20 sheet boxes of Brovira in two different makes. Both look very promising in lith developer.

I received hkbenji's "Covid Fishing" yesterday. Simple but really effective composition. Person fishing, with mask, in the foreground, and nicely muted out city and clouds in the background. Nicely printed digitally on Hahnemuhle paper. Thanks! And I think you win the prize for the longest in the post: posted on November 21, received January 19! Can we blame all that delay on covid???

A card from bedrof arrived yesterday. I like the use of 35mm film in place of 120 film in order to save money, and test equipment. The grain, and light brown tone, enhance the photo. Well done in capturing the outside wall details, as well as the shadow on the wall.

So my cards are finally printed and in the mail - hopefully they don’t take too long to arrive! Apologies again for the delay, I know I’ll be much quicker next round!

I have a lot of cards to comment on, which I hope to do later today when I get back home.

And my card has arrived in the UK Rachelle.

A lovey night time square image from Rachelle's travels. I love the format - it really works with this picture and the scene makes me want to go there - which I always find to be a good indication of if the print works or not. Well it works for me!

Great stuff.

So since I've been extremely busy in the past month I now have time to comment on 4 more postcards I've received.
@Howard Earl : Photo of an old barn which reminds me that by now I've reached an age that I still remember these corrugated iron barns in the Netherlands. The way it's photographed makes it a unique subject. I love the tonal scale reached with this material and chemicals.
@bedrof: Wonderful this lith printing technique, very interesting details and texture of this pine tree, especially the history of a gathered seed that started growing in ones backyard after a holiday makes it even more interesting.
@MattKing: Here I see a picture that reminds me of the Dutch Ooijpolder where in early spring you can see the same flooded plain. I love the composition of the tree and the chosen composition. Also the carefully chosen processing even makes the picture a nice to have one.
@mooseontheloose: Well all I can say is that this pictures makes me jealous. Such a nice composition, such a nice light, such a limited traffic in the street, and in its presentation the perfect framing. This is photografy the way I would like to make my pictures. Now I have to find the time to make a journey to Khiva when we all have overcome the current pandemic.

Regards and all stay safe.

Alright, the school year is done and the grades are in, so I now have some time to catch up with my comments. I received a lot of really nice cards this round, which is always great for keeping me motivated and getting me back into the darkroom.

Right off the bat, two wonderful cyanotypes from @rst and @MattiS. The former is quite serene and the latter quite dynamic due to the nature of the pinhole image.
I also liked the seascape images I got from @hkbenji and @BSP - "Covid fishing" shows that life still goes on during the pandemic, and "who let the dogs out" is quite humorous with the dog not afraid of the rough sea and his owner trying their best not to get wet.
Next, I also got a pair of still life images - the leaf with a face from @gijsbert, and "Never Give Up" from @drpsilver - a good motto anytime, but especially during this past year.
I also quite liked @RSImages "Colossus" - was interested in finding out more about the sculpture as a result! @Michael Teresko's empty field has a desolate feeling but has reminded me that I've got quite a lot of Superpan in the film fridge waiting to be shot! @Howard Earl's "Old Barn" is a subject that I always enjoy, especially as we have nothing like here in Japan.
There was a trio of tall building images in this round as well: @tezzasmall's Lloyd's Building follow-up really captures the essence of height, although it is abstract enough that it works in virtually every orientation. @Dan McGuire's "Springford Steeple" is stunning in it's clarity and detail and @Oxleyroad's "Galle Fort - Lighthouse" is a nice reminder of when travel was normal, and Sri Lanka was (and still is) high on my places to visit.
Finally, I also quite liked the pure landscape photos from this round - @mfohl's pinhole image of "Two Trees", @FotoGys' sandy dunes, and @iandvaag's "Qu'appelle Valley." It's not often we get handmade emulsions in the postcard exchange, so this was a real treat. I also quite like it because it reminds of me of road trips with my parents from Manitoba to Alberta (where my brother lives) - we would always drive this stretch of road between Yorkton and Regina, but unfortunately never stopped anywhere, as my parent's are a "get there as fast as you can" type of travellers - so no time for photos for me. Hopefully the next time I go home I'll have a little bit more time to explore.

Finally, I have one card that is MIA from @Luis-F-S. I know you sent your cards out and I'm pretty sure I got it, but I cannot locate it at the moment. It may be lost amongst all the papers and classwork I have strewn about the apartment. If and when I find, I'll let you know!

Thanks everyone for a great round!

@mfohl - Thanks for the nice comments. Yeah, I don't know what's up here with the postal service.. Incredibly slow..!

I received two more postcards with thanks-

@mooseontheloose - Lovely and timeless night scene from Uzbekistan. Great composition and tones!
@bedrof - Great rock formation and sky. I also like the texture of the paper, it works great with the image!

Another exotic postcard from an exotic place from mooseontheloose. A beautiful evening shot from Khiva in Uzbekistan. A well lit building along a nice avenue with some folks moving along. I'd love to go to those places. Thanks Rachelle!

Whew, where has the time gone! My much delayed cards were posted yesterday and should be with UK locations today, and everyone else in the next week or so.

My thanks to all who've already sent me their card. I'll provide feedback in a further post.

@Michael Teresko - Very cool to read that the negative was developed in Mytol. I like the composition of this image. The bollards give a nice rhythm to the image. The quality of the print from the Epson is great.

@mooseontheloose - You are making me jealous with all these exotic locations you visit! The print is very impressive and well set within the space of the card. The soft glow of lights really lend themselves to the time when this photo was taken. I really like the play between the subtle movement of people within the image and the tack sharp brickwork of the main building.

@Howard Earl - I really like the composition of this image. The thick grass and looming woodland make the barn feel like it's tucked away out of sight. I take it this was a contact print? The grass has an amazing texture to it, and with the barn nestled in, it's almost like looking at a ship in the sea.

@MattKing - With the heavy rains we've had where I live I certainly can relate to this image. I like this image very much! Nice to see the effect of the toning too. It really lends itself to the overall feel of the image. The subtle focus also gives an eerie feel to the image. Thanks!

@RSImages - That must have been an impressive subject to be in the presence of. The Ansco really is capable of producing some great images, but I take it that 95% of that quality comes from the user holding it! Your local sorting office must have some worn sorting machines, as the print has been roughed up a bit. That said, it all adds to the unique quality of these exchanges.

@drpsilver - When your card first reached me it was exactly the right card for the right moment, and it put a smile across my face. Really liking the stamps on the back! The difference of texture, reflection, and shadows, between each of the items makes for a great viewing experience.

@tezzasmall - As soon as I saw your card I knew who it was from. Another impressive image of an equally impressive building. The perspective on this image is really interesting, and viewing the print at different orientations brings a lot to the experience. I must take a trip there some time!

@gijsbert - This is a fun and seasonal image. The strong contrast really makes the veins of the leaf pop. There is a luminous glow about it, almost like the leaf is coming to life by being in the water. I really like the grain of HP5 here too.

@iandvaag - A very interesting image. It's awesome to see a truly self made image. The details in your letter made for great reading. The image itself reminds me album covers/photos of some black metal albums I used to listen too.

@Laurent - Thank you for doubling down on your cards. I recently found myself in the same position! It's nice to see two different interpretations together. Your notes made for good reading. I've also found most of my images with walking distance of my house (especially in these trying times). A nice stamp of Marianne to remind me of that which has been taken from the people during current events is to be returned!

@darinwc - What a lovely image. A great example of a decisive moment in photography! I very much enjoyed the note about the aged Dektol. I must give that a go myself. Though I suspect I won't get much mileage out of my RC stock.

@Luis-F-S - I really do like high contrast prints such as yours. They really have a 3D quality about them. Not sure if I should post this comment in PXC50 or not though. Very impressive to see a 8x10 reduced to a fraction of a size. I enjoy your envelopes too.

@hkbenji - After thousands of miles your print was almost lost in the last few feet. The postman must have delivered your card shortly before I returned to my house, because when I approached my door I saw an envelope blowing away down the street. I'm glad a chased after it! A very nice image, which presents an almost iconic example of local life. The two tone border is most enjoyable. The quality of your prints are great! Thank you for sending.

My thanks to all for their cards. The exchange has been, and continues to be, a great experience!

The card from mooseontheloose from Uzbekistan is magical. A part of the world I have never visited, except through Rachelle's photos. It is wonderfully sharp, has great tones, and draws the viewer into the photo. Khiva looks like a magical place. Over the years you have been to some very remarkable places. Thank you for sharing your journeys.

Thank you for your postcard Rachelle which reached me somewhere last week.....this lockdown-business is makking me lose track of time.
But everytime I receive a handcrafted postcard from members of this group, time stands still for a little while giving me space to reflect on my place in this strange world we have allowed to come into existence. You card made me smile and get exited again with anticipation of traveling again to new places and meeting great people along the way.

@Lucid

Thanks for your hard work and patience in capturing that butterfly in such a classic fassion. Looking at the contact print you made for this postcard makes me long to see a large print of this. There is something about the mood in the image you captured...it is like a eye looking back at me.

Kind regards,

Stay sane and stay negative!

@Rowreidr

I am loving these contact printed large format postcards. How lovely they are to hold and behold.
The moodiness just oozes from your foggy day in the park. My wife was very taken with the format and so I mansplained the mechanics of large format and contact printing to her - I just couldn't help myself.

Well done and thank you, I hope you and you family are keeping up well.

@BSP

Sorry to disappoint, I am still not analog printing yet, but I do know that mansplaining to the wife is always fun! This was taken with one of @dirkfletcher creations. He put a 65mm LF lens on a 616 Ikonta folder which shoots approximately 6 x 12 on 120 with 3d printed adapters. I actually looked into contact printing (without an enlarger in the bathroom), but wanted to get these done so I could sign up for #52. I digitized the negative with a single frame on a Canon 80D, adjusted some curves in PS, and printed inkjet with a Canon Pro-10 on Red River Paper San Gabriel semigloss paper.

There was a size discrepancy in my cards that my wife did not like. My domestic US postcards were 3 x 6 inches, to take advantage of the postcard rate, while the international cards were printed at a noticeably larger 4 x 8 inches, since I was not size restricted. In the future, my inkjet cards will all be printed to the larger letter size, so everyone can bask in their glory... haha.

Again, thanks to all for a great batch of cards. Now that I've been here a few rounds, I like seeing the image selections from the repeat senders, including you too Bill!

I received a very nice card from Lucid today. "Nectar", a butterfly on some lovely flowers. A very interesting shot, too, as I don't often see folks shooting butterflies with a 4x5 camera. Nice card, and nice stamps, too. Unfortunately, there was no postmark so I don't know how long it took to get across the pond. Anyway, thanks for the nice card Max!

I've received three cards over the last few days. @Lucid's "Nectar" arrived today. I'm always fond of anything related to flowers and butterflies so this image is really interesting to me.

Last week I received a card from @mooseontheloose. A very intriguing view of Khiva at night.

@Rowreidr, I also received your card late last week. The mystery of the fog draws you in.

Yesterday two cards from this round landed in my mailbox.
The card from Lucid confused me until I read his description. It took me a minute to see the butterfly. Well done to keep such sharp focus on a windy day. One has to develop patience to do large format photography. I really like how you printed the background black and focused the viewer on the butterfly and flowers.
The card from Rowreidr of a family in the fog is beautiful. The trees and repeating fractal patters of the branches add interest to the photo. I am not familiar with the paper you used. Was this printed digitally?

Wow, I got 4 cards today, 1 for #50, 2 for #51 and one #52, even two from the same person - mooseontheloose! Did those get mailed at the same time or are there so few mail flights from Japan these days? Anyway, nice exotic city scape in the evening in Uzbekistan. You really take trips off the beaten path, very cool! Very nice tonality, and I like the long exposure ghosts of people.
And Nectar from lucid, photo of a butterfly on small flowers, intriguing combination of nature and abstraction through the black surrounding.
Thanks!

Thanks gijsbert! The cards were sent over a week apart, maybe more. Interesting that they came together!

3 cards for the PCX51

bedrof: Your lith looks like a scene from pre industrial Europe. I love it. I’m also saving the envelope and stamps.
Rowreidr: Fog scene with people. Very well done.
moose on the loose: you must be very busy sending such impressive cards all over the world. Thank you for allowing me insight to your world travels.

And I've just received two more cards.

From Rowreidr, a panoramic card of a very foggy day. Silhouettes of two people and a centrally placed bare leafed tree add to the story.

Lucid, has sent a card which could be viewed at all the rotations possible. It's the first time I've seen a LF camera used to take a close up of a butterfly on a Buddleia / butterfly bush. The darkened area around the subject works really well to focus your eyes on the main subject.

Great stuff!
