Five cards in the mailbox today!

A photo of a beautiful baby girl from JamesDean. I love this one!

rst has sent a very nice photograph of stranded jellyfish. Well printed too on Adox Fineprint Classic, a paper I should try out sometime.

Also the envelope from Mike Wilde containing three cards. Great situation captured in "The first dip of the year" I also like the Old Homestead, especially with the story behind it.

Thanks!

I also received JamesDean's card "Baby Charlotte". Congratulations for the newest member of your family. What a story, and challenge. Growing from 660 gm (1.5 lb) must have been a miracle to watch. I am happy that she is doing well. This is my favorite card in this round thus far.

Regards,
Darwin

The Bean & Jellyfish arrived this week!

I remember seeing The Bean when I was doing a photoshoot for a hotel in Chicago a couple of years back - I'[d love to get back there!
And the Jellyfish reminds me so much of the beach scenes back in Adelaide, Australia - my hometown.

This week I received :

JamesDean's Baby Charlotte. Very nice portrait of a newborn.

rst's Jellyfish. I love the lines of the shore, as well as the presence of the jellyfish. The paper is very nice, and feels "right" (hope the Ilfobrom I just got is as nice)

Mike Wilde envelope with three small prints. Again very nice images, and very nice vintage papers !

Thanks to you three

Due to some physical problems it will take a bit of time to print and post my cards.

Hopefully I can send them in about 1-2 weeks, so they'll come but bit later then I intended to.

Thanks for your understanding

My mail consisted only of postcards today! Wonderful.
 • Mike Wilde's 3 wonderful cards - all great papers - I love old paper too;
 • James Dean's beautiful baby girl

And a ring-in from Round 20!

Flooding here making it difficult to get to a post office - when I can reach one safely, they'll be in the mail.

Hi,

[organize-mode on]

Every once in a while I get PMs with questions like: I signed-in for the MAX but I only have that and that number of addresses on my list, is that OK?

Let me try to explain and I will add this to the description for future rounds.

The postcard exchange is a real exchange. That means you should receive a postcard from everyone on your list. That would be easy if everybody would sign-in for the max. But we decided to allow to limit the number of postcards - for good reasons I think since this allows people with less printing capacity (be it because of time or money or whatever) to participate as well. Now if we have 40 participants and one of them would only sign-in for 10 postcards, then that guy would also only receive 10 postcards and there would be 29 participants who would not send a postcard to this guy and therefore not send the max.

However, I tried hard to optimize my little program and so we usually end up near the theoretical optimum. E.g. With the data for this round we send out 1190 postcards. The theoretical optimum would have been 1215 postcards. So we are just 2% off which is not too bad. And it is unclear if there would even be a possible mapping to reach the optimum.

OK, I tried to assemble something which I call the Postcard Exchange Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

It is just a start and I do not know if I covered everything, so feel free to send me questions ... and answers ... and corrections and I will add them to the FAQ.

Cheers

James Dean – Baby Charlotte – A most skillful use of short depth of field in a low lighting/available light photo. The sharpness of her eye, draws you in against all the other softly rendered shapes and tones. This is also a fine example of a very nice low key image. Very touching.

Jim Rollinger – The Bean – An excellent capture of a most amazing subject. The distortions of the rectilinear tile pattern of the plaza floor are most captivating. I saw this piece of sculpture in person during a summer holiday a few years ago, and was most awe struck by the great urban park the Millennium Park is today. The engineer in me also was most struck by the challenges that must have been involved in fabricating it.

RST- A neat snap that gave me exposure to another culture’s take on the possibilities of street food. Additionally I enjoyed the apparently overcast lit scene being printed onto a matt finished photo paper. The scene is given more impact by the care in finely portraying the texture of the bricks in the paving and wall, as well as the stucco of the building.

Uwe Piltz – Stalingrad grave. Great framing. I enjoy the lower third being filled with low scrubby shrubs, and then the upper portion being divided more vertically by the window frame and vines. Nice sensitivity from the text as well.

Always nice to find these postcard images among the mountain of other bits of mail and flyers that seem to over fill my mailbox at least three times a week.

I know I get mail delivery five days a week, but my letter carrier or the upstream sorter never has adressed mail for me on Monday.

Friday I don't get any mail unless it is adressed to me. The letter carrier does shoulder a heavy bag on Wednesday and Thursday to get all the junk mail delivered those days.

Presumably it lets them make a short day of Friday.

Well I've printed my cards last weekend and posted them today. Curios what you all think of it.

I received in the past week:
- Ruediger's Hundestrand, well seen and nice printed.
- Nice picture of baby Charlotte from James Dean, the way a baby should be shot and good to here that all goes well now.
- Mark Barent's Conceru, well shot of a lovely scene, like the way it is composed and printed. Beautifull to see other people working on old machines

Groet,
Guus

Two cards arrived today.

Darwins "Trees can look like so many things" - nice, detailed and inspiring print.

Mark Barendts Concern is a look into a time long gone. Well seen, good feel for the right moment.

This is great so far, keep them coming.

Cheers
Ruediger
