Postcard Exchange Round 14 Results and Feedback ...

I received 4 very nice postcards today: Mike Wilde's "Heading Home" (I like pictures of old people still obviously in love after all those years of holy deadlock); David B's iconic "Flea Market"; Ruediger's "Paris Metro" (I have a similar picture taken in Hanoi a few years ago); and Buster 6x6's "Tools", which unfortunately reminded me of all the things needing fixing around here.

I finally found time to print my postcards last night after weeks of distractions (well normal life really - visitors, illness, work, etc) and hope to write and post them all by Saturday.

Well, now that I'm back in Canada I have finally been able to see all the postcards that have been sent my way.

Heather - I really like the vintage vingetting on the squid, and the stamp is fantastic!
Darwin - another great photo that inspires me to see what we have out here in the country
I also enjoyed Mike Wilde's revisiting the past as a photographer with the negative and the paper

Ruediger - have you been trailing me? My last day in Paris was spent wandering around the Abbesses metro area (found an old Lubitel at the flea market there) -- and what do I find when I come home? Your postcard reminding me of Paris, and showing how every photographer will come up with something different when photographing in the same area

I have received 7 cards so far and they are all up on my darkroom/studio wall. Thanks to Darwin (I like the composition, and feel of this); Mark (great texture and pattern); Sly (this is a favourite of mine); Warren (subtle - I keep coming back to this one); Ruediger (When I see this, I just want to fly to Paris and shoot); Rachelle (Excellent use of HIE - Another favourite of mine).

Well it's been a busy summer thus far and I haven't been able to spend much time here but I have printed my cards and they will go out on Monday.
Meanwhile I've received a whole bunch and I've really been enjoying getting the mail. I got Rachelle's IR shot, really magical and Mike Wilde's Canada Day photo from 1985. That is a very charming moment, I was thinking of this image yesterday as I saw similar scenes at the 4th of July parades I went to. I also have Lillian's Snow Drops, Beautiful still life and beautifully printed. I got Peter's picture from the Bahamas, I hope that wasn't your accomodations, Peter!
I got Heather's image of the Squid in a jar, I've always loved natural history museums and their collections of dead things in jars, very odd and 19th century. Nice treatment, and I have Mark Fisher's detail from Hustler WI, (Hooter Bowl indeed, I will have to look that up!) Nice play of textures, well done. Continuing the 'blad trend is David's Albuqerque Flea Market, something of a Robert Frank feel around this one, cool. And yet another 'blad shot is is Warren's Big Top. Great abstract, looks great upside down too, I thought it was snow or sand at first. Back in 35mm land I have KingJon's latte Stones, those are crazy looking things, and Cara's stone figure in blue, something mysterious there, reminds me of Atget's garden pictures. Finally, at least so far is Ruediger's picture of bikes at a Paris metro stop. I really like it, so did my wife. It's hard not to think of Atget here too, beautiful. I hope to visit there myself someday. Thanks everybody!

Over the weekend I got four more cards. A very nice salt print from Anke. Do you coat your glass plates yourself? Then Mark sent another card for the Hasselblad convention I like the play of textures and shape. Peter sent an image of an abandoned something on the Bahamas. It seems that nature is striking back. And Paul sent a nice and atmospheric image which he found in an orchestra pit.

So this round is still on its way to get to the best I participated in.

Today I received a card from PVia "Contra bassist" I think it is extraordinary how the lens captured contrabass and hand movement with just enough blur to give feeling of motion. Well done. And all at F2 wow.

Mike Wilde.. the romantic in me absolutely loves this one, the long walk home.. faithful companion by their side.. just gorgeous thank you.
KingJon, Jon fascinating stones I'd love to know more of the story behind them.. and they are so beautifully printed.
Peter Schrager I'm with Oz on this one.. oh to be in warmer climes! It's gorgeous and funnily it's the first photo of the Bahama's I've ever seen without colour.. and it really works!
Buster from the snippet on the wall.. covered in grease stains, I can imagine the rest of the room.. really great photo.
Pvia Paul, I loved this from the second I saw it, but it was only as I removed the sticker the postal system had added (unflatteringly it has to be said) I saw the blurred arm and loved it even more. Gorgeous shot.
Anke this has quickly become a favourite, I love the shot, the paper and the tones.. truly the only thing that could improve this would be the smell.. really beautiful, thank you.

After an insane few weeks in work I'm disappearing to my darkshed this weekend and hope to have all my cards out by next week.. Being a first timer, I am reticent to do so with the high standard of cards that have dropped through my letterbox.. but it really has been an inspiration seeing them all. Thanks to everyone taking part.

rwyoung's Hobo Duckies, very cool, it has a great glow about it. Are they riding the rails? Lined up like that they remind me of a shooting gallery.
tlsid's image of the Harmon Killabrew shack. Nicely done and good for you that you made a picture after driving by for years. I've got plenty of such spots on my list, and too many that I waited too long to do. I like the way you used the trees to enhance the modestness of the little shack.
Buster6x6's Tools. Beautiful composition and tonality, the wrenches seem to pop right off the card. For some reason the post office chose to put the cancelation stamp right front and center, and they put a big magic marker stripe down the left edge of the picture. Never the less, the shot comes through. I might try some pec-12 to clean it up.
Today I got Adrian's cool pic of a steam tractor. I love the big spinning wheels and the steady gaze of the operator. I'm not sure I can say why exactly, but that man seems very British to me, in a good kind of old fashioned way, if that makes any sense. Anyway, anyone who likes steam engines and tractors that much is alright in my book.

I echo what others have said about the card from PVia. I really like the sense of motion, and intense concentration, of the musician. Well done Paul. The card from tlsid (Terry Strong) reminds me of a farm near my home that I photographed. I like your composition of tall vs. short, straight vs. branched, ... Great tones and detail.

Well, after commenting on Rachelle's card, I went on holiday. When I came back, I found cards from the following APUGers in random order (I hope I haven't temporarily misplaced any other cards I may have received...) :

Peter Schrager: nice shot, great detail to see some movement from the wind in the leaves.
Buster6x6: this is the 3rd round (I think) that I received a photo from you, and for the 2nd time, I recognized a Buster6x6 without looking on the back. Love your style, love the subject.
rst: well, in the Netherlands, I'm used to seeing a lot of bikes parked in the strangest places, but your shot and location is very nice.
Mark Fisher: these details and structures are just a great subject. Great card!
Warren Hinder: big top, very subtle, abstract almost. I guess this would look great as a huge enlargement...
David Bram:Nice shot of the flea market, nice depth of field on this shot.
Darwin:Jug in the cabinet. You've given me some inspiration with this shot, thanks.
sly: Wonderful, wonderful! Absolutely wonderful.
Anke: Wow, this is something special! A great shot, and a special technique. I'll need to search APUG a bit to find out more about this... How is this done? (Or did you already explain earlier in this thread?)

As for myself... Well, due to the interruption called holiday, I am more than a bit delayed, but at least I've narrowed it down to two candidates. I hope I can do some more test prints this week, and print all my cards next week. Add a few more days for writing and addressing; I hope within two weeks from now they can be in the mail.

rwyoung "Hobo Duckies" What a wonderful shot.I can't believe how nice and conrasty the image is. Really nice.
Anke Drewitz with " Lime three blossom" I find this to be so artistic. Well presented and composed. And I bet you a lot of work. Congrats Anke well done. Wow I really like this one.

Jacco, this is a salted paper print (or saltprint), you get a good discription of this process here:

Ruediger, no, I don't coat the glass plates by myself, I bought them from wephota / banse & grohmann. But with the saltprint process I have to coat the paper with the emulsion, that's enough to do.

Received two cards today from Eric Mah and Rlibersky. The card from Eric hints to the peacefulness of the morning. Randy's card I really like because of the tones that you created. I have been everything I can get my hands on to create the deep brown tones in this print. I never had the chance to work with AZO paper. I understand it gave wonderful tones (being a contact printing paper).

Thanks Terry(tlsid) on an really amazing card.First I never seen a hay stacker before ,which reminds me of European well bailers which are very similar, with weight and bucket. I can't get over the sharpness of Tominon lens,contrast if perfect.I hope that my 75mm Tominon lens is as good as yours I have not tried it yet, really amazing.Well done.

Buster 6X6: Another very interesting "Tools" theme. Love the textures and the subject matter.
David Bram: Flea market t-shirts. Very cool image! Love the images of the T-Shirts. Never seen anything like that where I live. I'd probably buy one!
Warren Hinder: Your image of the Big Top becomes so abstract. Thanks for showing me something I've never seen.
Rst Ruediger: All I can say is WOW. I dream of seeing that scene in Paris and you just reminded me of one of the places I have to see. My cards are coming! Sorry for the lateness.
mooseontheloose Rachelle: Welcome back to Canada! Thanks for the Hie card! I love the infrared so much. I'm considering changing my license plate to HIE 135. Love the black dramatic skies that are in lots of HIE images. Looks like a very photogenic place where you shot. Thanks.
Mark Fisher: Gorgeous texture and tones. Is it Sepia or something similar? Forgive my ignorance. Is that what thiocarbimide toning is? I also love to sepia tone but I don't know it by any other name.
Anke Drewitz: Your card is so lovely and I could almost smell the blossoms! What an interesting thing to write!! I am and have always been very influenced, inspired, and moved by smell.
Akki14 Heather: Love your subject matter! What a great card. This is something I would really gravitate towards as far as subject matter. The vignetting looks great too!
Sly Lillian: What can I say about your beautiful card! I have loved this image ever since I first seen it as your avatar. It looks great and thank you so much for choosing it as your postcard.

I just received Anke Drewitz's card. I love how soft it feels. This card has so much 3D character I could almost walk along the path past the blossoms. This is the first salt print I have seen outside a museum, and held in my hands. Thanks for the introducing another alternate process into this exchange. Did you tone this to give the brown color, or is this characteristic of the process you use? Thanks Anke.
