Hey, I have received many cards yet and hope to find the right time to comment at least at some of them. It is a bit busy over here so I am late this round. I may find the time to print my cards this weekend and send them out next week. Sorry for the delay.

ciao

Got KingJon's card today. I love how he's named Rip, and you call him 'home security'. He looks like he wouldn't harm a fly.

I'll be re-printing my cards out this weekend, and sending them out next week.

Two more cards arrived today:

1:Pep MiroTwo peaceful floating swans.Very nice reminds me on spring. We had another dump of 5" of snow today.
2:mooseontheloose Chateau ruins and vineyards in France. What an idyllic setting especially brought out with HEI film.Well done.Nice hand writing Rachelle.

My postcards are (obviously) going to be late. I just moved and started a new job. I have access to the darkroom at the college here (which I was excited about). However, today I finally checked it out and, well, it's a little bit of a mess. I was thinking of printing today, but after the visit, I need to order some supplies so I can feel at home in there. So hopefully I'll be printing away next weekend and send them off then, but it could very well be the following weekend when I actually get to print.

I have to apologise - I'm running horribly behind schedule this round... I'm afraid what little time I've had outside of work has been occupied by the multiple hassles of trying to buy a house - lawyers, mortgage companies, insurance companies, estate agents, urgh, it feels like an absolute bloody nightmare. I haven't even had time to take a proper look at the cards I've received yet .

Anyway, I have finally managed to find some time in the 'darkroom' (bathroom) this afternoon, and got a start going on my cards; hopefully I'll finish the job in the next day or so and get them sent out over the course of the week!

Two more cards today:

Doug - a great IR shot of NYC - Madison Sq. park? and KingJon's fierce home protector who looks like he'd rather chase a frisbee:D

Got Jon King's Pantheon today. Great lighting, I feel as if I'm looking at an old engraving.

01 Mar 2008

Received a card from BlackDog (Jake Williams) today. I really like how the vase seems to float above the print - it looks 3-dimensional. The card from Doug Smith is another testament to the magic of HIE.

Regards,
Darwin

Bad news people...my cards are going to be late. I won't have access to a darkroom for at least a few weeks...(it's in my friend's basement and he's got a nasty flu!) I may just have to get my local lab to do them for me...sob!

I've got a big group here since I last posted:
Paul Viapiano's Bamboo Gardens, someone mentioned that it might be better in color, I think it is great the way it is, beautiful midtones. Blackdog'sOde to Shelley, I love the use of the text, and the mystery in the dark opening. KingJon's pic of Rip, a great face, doesn't look like he would scare anybody, but I bet he protects the kids without hesitation. Doug Smith'sIR shot in the park. Very dreamlike, and I can't figure out what that bright line is near the center of the picture, looks like the woman with the dog set off a rocket! The other Jon King's picture of the Pantheon, really well handled, and although I usually don't like to praise a photograph by saying it looks like some other medium, this one does remind me of graphite drawings, and I think that is a good thing here. FM2n'shandsome large format shot of the big tree and school buildings, nicely done. Mooseontheloose's shot from Alsace, great use of IR (I really miss that stuff sometimes) perfect subject for it with the ruins and the vinyard and trees to "light up". astroclimb'smoody picture of the cross on the hill. I like the low values you used here, these big crosses often seem creepy to me and this picture fits those feelings well. Josep's swans, perfect light on the birds and a very peaceful picture. Mick Fagan's portrait, beautiful shot, she has a beautiful smile and seems very natural and relaxed in front of the camera. Thanks for your detailed description of this picture, Mick. It is interesting to know how much work goes into one sucessful shot. Colin's picture from Iraq! Wow, that place looks awesome. Thank you for the picture and thank you for your service there. I hope you have plenty of time for photography. Two more: Terry Strong's shot of the waterwheel. Cool, how old is that thing and is it still providing water power to something? Neat. Finally, Heather's cyanotype of her goldfish. I love the blueprint and it's a totally perfect subject to be rendered in blue. The brushed edges are great and it's cool to know that each postcard you made is unique. Must have taken you a while to print the whole set. It's beautiful, thank you, and it is my wife's favorite so far too.
Wow, that was a lot. This has been a great round. My cards just went out, hope you enjoy them.

I made it into the darkroom today for the first session I've been able to do for a few weeks. The good news is that project 1 was postcards. They're printed and should be posted tomorrow, or a little more likely, Tuesday.
Thanks for all that arrived so far, I've lost track - again.
Sorry for the delay in getting mine out.

Barry

I received Doug's HIE postcard last week.

I find cyanotypes a bit quicker to make than normal B&W. I don't need to set up my darkroom once I have my enlarged negative(s) so it feels like less work for me even though it is probably a little longer if you include drying times.

sorry i didn't put much info on the water wheel pic. it was taken with a yashica mat 124 w/delta 100 film, don't remember f stop or speed, sorry. i positioned my self so it would be back lit. and don't know the age of the thing and there is several of them along the irrigation canal and it provides water for some of the farmers in the area.

3 more during the last few days...

Black Dog's Secret Life of Objects #102. Does this mean there are actually at least 100 more in this series?

Doug Smith's HIE in NYC. Caught the winter light feeling perfectly! What paper is this printed on?

Jon King's Parthenon...beautiful gradation of tones, almost looks like an old etching...and finally I get to see what Ilford Matte looks like ;-)

Got BWKate's card today, I love the symmetry, I wish there was a place like this around me
Also got SoFrizza's card today, Ive been wanting to do a shot like this while I'm on the train, real lovely.

Two great IR shots came in today -- Doug's and BWKate's. Both are really beautiful with a nice tonality that I have yet to achieve with IR in the darkroom. Doug - I really love how great the IR looks in the middle of winter -- it's already given me ideas of what I might try to shoot around here (although the leaves and flowers are almost in bloom!). Kate -- that coastal shot is just gorgeous -- I wish there was scenery around here as beautiful as what you captured (have to wait until I get to Ireland in April for those kinds of opportunities...)

Kate -- I went to do some printing today to get your card in the mail, but unfortunately it was taken over by bunch of teenagers ready to develop their pinhole photographs! Glad to see the the young'uns in the darkroom, but it's been two weeks since I've been able to get some free time to go so it was a bit frustrating. Oh well - that's what Friday nights are for.

I just love prints made with IR film today I got two of them one from BW Kate Thanks Kate for the comments on my print.I really like the balance the walls create. I think the graffiti adds a balance to the print. Very nice.
Doug Smith I really did not know that IR can be nice in the winter such a nice glow between the threes in the front.

Greg

Today I got a wonderful print from SoFrizza. I like trains too. Thanks a lot.

Today I received a card form Ian (Stan160) of what appears to be carnival photos. What makes the card so interesting is that they seem to be taken with at pinhole camera, and frames are overlapping. It gives a real sense of where the photographer has been. Almost like a fused panorama in time. What a novel idea Ian. Thanks for a unique card.

Regards,
Darwin

P.S. What is a "Pinhole Blender"? Let me guess a strip of negative where the frames merge.

Thanks Darwin,

Glad you liked the card. More info about the Pinhole Blender here. Great fun, I've got the single pinhole 120 version, but they also do multiple pinhole versions.

Ahhh, you sent pinhole cards? Great, I am curious because I just finished my 8x10" pinhole camera and currently dive into tray development of sheet film. Well and since my darkroom is so small I do one tray development which also results in things like drying the floor in the darkroom from water used to presoak the film while the film is in the developer etc. A whole lot of new experiences in totally darkness :surprised:)

Looking forward to your card and I hope mine will go out to the mail today or tomorrow.

Have fun

Ian -- I just received your card today as well and I absolutely love it -- have already pulled out the credit card to order one of the 120 versions. ;-) I've been experimenting with panaromas with my Holga but I like the look of the pinhole blender even better.

Rachelle

I received Jon King's postcard. Funnily enough it was when i was on my way out of my flat to the airport to visit my parents in NH, so the card's almost got a round trip journey so far :D It's a lovely photo of the pantheon.
I'm sure I've probably received more cards but I won't be able to account for them for a while.
