How do you decide between the DSLR and a film rangefinder? Curious as it isn't (street / social doc.) an area of photography I have much experience of.

I have no process. Random chance, mainly...sometimes if I'm going to an event that I think I may be able to get a few 'stock' type images from, I'll take my DSLR...in case I get something I can use professionally later. I don't mean to be unhelpful but I mostly just take it as it feels, at the moment I head out...years of doing it give me a sense of what will work.
Mainly I don't overthink it. Just do.

You could subscribe. Many of us do so, because it permits us to both support Photrio and post our photos in the galleries.
