While I'm on a roll, here another that didn't make my cut for one of the three images I sent in for Holgaweek.

Holga 120 Pan on Kodak Ektar film @ "sunny", bulb mode, 120 seconds.

The Holga 120 Pan has a lens. I metered for f/11 and included the calculated reciprocity failure time for the film.

The film isn't mirrored in the camera, it's inverted 180 degrees, so that upper-left light strike area would be in the lower right of the film gate. I suspect you had the sun near the frame and picked up flare from inside the camera -- especially likely if you just removed the 6x4.5 mask to get 6x6 images, as opposed to replacing the 16 frame mask with a 12 frame one. The mask includes a light baffle that ought to trap most of the stray light from outside frame.

Hmm, interesting, I just had a look in the back of the Holga and looking at a lamp with the back open and the lamp is clearly visible on the mask/baffle! I guess the baffle should have been made with a more acute angle to not cause reflections.
The 6x6 mask was in, I like the vignetting which wouldn't happen in 645. I thought, but not totally sure now, that the sun was behind me for this particular frame. Still a bit mysterious...

That would be the bottom right of the camera - was the 6x6 mask in? I've seen similar-looking leaks when the mask wasn't in - ran across that with a used Holga that I bought that the person had cut the baffle area out of the mask for some reason. An un-molested mask fixed it.




I've read that some folks have rigged a paperclip and rubber band set-up, with one side connected to the tripod mount, to hold the shutter down. Someone else also mentioned using a piece of cardboard as a wedge.

You'd think there would some movement while rigging up the rubber band, but I guess with long enough exposure that wouldn't really matter. Cool, I should have look at how to attach a filter to get long enough exposure time.

The only other thing I can think of is that something happened to slightly pry apart the back from the body momentarily while in direct sunlight. The bodies are fairly flexible so its possible. Earlier this year I shot an entire roll not realizing the clip on the wind side was engaged with the back tab NOT under it, so that side was not fully flush to the body. Surprisingly I was OK - but I was shooting long exposures at night. I think in daylight it would have been toast.

Yeah with really long exposures that first opening of the shutter is so inconsequential to the whole image. The amount of light that comes in then doesn't even begin to make the image, and on a Holga you aren't getting the sharpest image to begin with so its all relative.

Had Wednesday off work, went out shooting in the pouring rain and brought only my Holga 120 Pinhole camera loaded with 35mm Fuji Acros film. One of the more interesting shots of the day was this one I made while driving between locations - camera on the tripod sat on the back seat with a long cable release cord. 60 second exposure.

So.............

I purchased one of the new Holga 120 Pan cameras from Freestyle as a back-up to the older one I already have.

On the Holga Facebook Group, a discussion popped up in the last few weeks regarding folks that have received their new 'Pans that are having problems focusing at infinity.

I pulled my new one out of the box last week and checked it with a piece of ground glass. Sure enough - blurry at infinity, and through the rest of the range as well. I had my old 'Pan next to it on another tripod and it was fine.

Freestyle was great as usual - they got back to me yesterday and issued a call-tag to take it back. They stated they are not able to send me a replacement at the moment as they are trying to figure out if this affects all or part of their new stock.

Just wanted to post this here as a follow-up in case anyone is wanting to pull the trigger on purchasing one right now - I'd recommend to wait.

I was trying to get the exposure time to somewhere in the 15-30 second range. I'd have to check my notes to see where it landed but it was somewhere in there.

Jeremy, it's funny that you mention this as I literally just received a Holga pan last week (2 actually, since I hope to turn one into a Holgagon). I was going to test it out this weekend, but now that you've mentioned this issue I'm hesitant to load film inside it.

Even though the lens won't focus at infinity, did you find that it can still achieve focus at the other settings (i.e. the listed distances for the focus marks aren't correct, but something in the image is still in focus), or is the lens simply a dud? I have a piece of ground glass from a TLR that I might try to use to check mine myself.

It's pretty much bad all the way through the range. This echoes what others have said on the Facebook group.
