Those of us who have had the privilege and pleasure of visiting this place could use a few photos at a time like this.

I would be real surprised if the building was NOT insured. So, no, no money to the Pope from me. I am also sure the Catholic Church could pay for this if it were not insured.

Alas on my only visit to Paris I was too young to have taken anything. Only a few years later I'd be toting a Pentax 6x7 around Europe, but alas, my visit to Notre Dame was before that. I'm just thrilled to find out that the building is still standing- I was afraid that all would be consumed in fire.

It is my understanding that Notre Dame is owned by the State. There have already been pledges of several hundred million euros for reconstuction.

I have no idea If the cathedral is insured or not nor do I know for definite whether the state or the Catholic Church owns it although it does sound as if the state owns it. However your second sentence does tend to "personalise" the thread into a for and against the Pope which is a great pity.

My opinion! Rebuild it first, fight over who pays for it later. It represents more than just religion, it shows what humans were capable of before modern construction techniques. I have always been impressed with the engineering that went into the buildings at the time. The "Dom" in Cologne is another example and there are more elsewhere in Europe. Most were spared from destruction during World Wars 1 and 2 by people who could have destroyed each in minutes but had better sense. And I can argue "for" and "against" religions but have found it a waste of time......Regards!

I saw that the candles standing on the alter had not melted. There was fire raining down a couple meters away. Hmmn.

Thanks for the photos. When I heard of this event yesterday it was a gut punch. I have only been once to Paris, but Notre Dame was certainly the esthetic highlight. The neighbourhood seemed to revolve around the place every evening. I guess beauty attracts people.

I was passing thru Paris on business in 2013, and happened upon the 850th anniversary of Notre Dame

A shot including the tower which collapsed in the fire

And the famous flying buttresses which hopefully will not collapse with the walls weakened by fire

Here (from point of Catholic Church) you became right C Jensen!
The Pope you mentioned phoned meanwhile Macron!
(Macron waited yesterday for many hours of that call - because from the Vatican first came no answer)
Well - and there will come No money from the Pope!!!

That is a real great nightshot - I made some simular but mine had problems from contrast via printing:sad:! I did wonder about why I shot it ( was looking a bit very bad:sick:)
Till the evening I decided to look again at it via projection (all from E6)!
Suddenly I did remember why I shot it (I forgot it)! Via projection of slides I felt
very fine looking at:wink:!

BTW is this shot in 100% symetry? I often like such symetric framing! You did it also in a good way (from my point)!
It looks fine but let me asked : (it is a very symetric framing of course - so I will not mind in details) " Was it indended to come a bit out of the middle - perhaps you feld not fine with the
stripe of lighter colered leaves that had drawn the view of the entrence - I could imagine?

Some great shots here.
BainDarret, may I ask if your shot is a scan of a print and if so what paper and developer. It has a warm tone to it that I find particularly pleasing. It may of course be a scan of a neg or a fairly neutral coloured print but the scanner has imparted this tone

Thanks

Pentaxuser, actually I cheated and the tone is a Photoshop creation. I found the original unpleasing so I warmed up the tone using Adobe Camera Raw. I grew up with large Etchings of Rouen and Bristol Cathedrals in our house done by a great uncle. I wanted to try to replicate the tonal effect of those works from the early twentieth century.
