This is a photographic series called 8. Inspired by the etchings of John Cage and chance operations to remove any artistic influence, I based my chance on a roll of a die. The amount of prints in this series was determined by two dice rolls. Inspired by Ebru artists, I chose to sprinkle chemicals on top of a pool of thickened water to create natural, and organic designs. Each piece was done on Kodak Polycontrast III, 5x7 paper and used standard developer, activator, fixer, stabilizer, and physical manipulation of the thickened water. What chemicals used were also dictated by numbers on the die; the number 1 constituted time to print. I am currently looking to make larger pieces using the same approach but slightly altered.

i've trying for 3 washes to get that same stain out of my favorite pants! who knew it was abstract art! hey, maybe... no, nevermind.

( i think you're on to something here!)

Two from my series "Autumnal Abstracts".... I have many more! :D

These were made by pointing the camera at the canopy in the fall and deliberately moving the camera while the shutter was open.

A long while ago I got called on posting a photo here -- I was told it was not an abstraction because I told what it was. So this is not the Grand Phallic Land Sculpture of The Andes.

I'm glad I managed to nudge you in the right direction

Regards,

Nice work Frank.

This is also a technique I sometimes use (my post #73, 90, 100). There is some physical involvement from the photographer (moving the camera wildly around) and snapping a large series of pictures, but inherently the pictures appear random, which has an element of surprise when inspecting the result. The creative part is selecting the crops for a nice composition. I think this must not be dismissed as cheap, because it is quite critical how to set up the camera and it is not easy to make it reproducible. I also think there is potentially room for experiment and innovation, to let the photos evolve into wonderful patterns.

Ok never tried to do an Abstract photo before, does this meet the standards?

Nothing wrong with it Peter. Nice pattern with a mix of regular and irregular parts. It is so abstract, when you would like to hang it on the wall one must ask which side must be up.
