Earlier this summer I posted some LF portraits and asked for some honest feedback. I got some very good advice publicly and privately and let it all stew around my head for a while then made a concerted effort at making photographs one weekend while visiting Rochester.

I kind of already knew my lens vignetted like this so tried to incorporate that in the photos as a framing element. There is a shot of Jim Galli's I got on an alternative photo swap where he did this and I really thought it was successful.

Anyway, here are the results.
5x7 Ilford FP4 developed in Rollo Pyro
Printed on Ilford Warmtone RC and developed in Dektol
Lens was a 12" (I think) projector petzval type mounted on a Packard shutter box.

Shot in late afternoon/early evening shade against aluminum siding.

An interesting note, the very pregnant Wendy gave birth to her daughter early the next morning (about 9 hours after this photo was taken).

It's an interesting effect. The problem is that your people placement has to be like the first three. If not then the vignetting does what it did to the pregnant lady.

The first three are partly enhanced by the lines in the siding, without that these pictures would not be as good.

As I said, I like the look but it is very limiting and if done too much looks like a gimmick.

Just an opinion.

very nice, that vignetting gives a beautyful effect. the first picture is the most in balance with vignetting and the position of the guy. maybe (after a better look) its because the background is more gray than washed out.

just my two cents
