I came home from work the other day and my 5 year old son presented me with this drawing. Yes, that is a Kodak 2D 8x10 on a Berlebach tripod (brown = wood). You can also see he captured my likeness quite well (I'm bald and short). He even got the bulb release for the Packard shutter.

His choice of medium is of course, crayon.

That's quite impressive!

Reminds me of Gerald McBoing-boing; maybe a future cartoonist ?

Better frame that one--seriously----that's a very nice piece of artwork and you'll treasure it even more down the road !!

Hah! Looks just like you!

Very nice, I remember those days, in fact our frig is still holding some on the front! Life comes at you fast though. My son is now 18 and just got accepted to the U of W.

Wait! Where's the knit cap?

Such a great drawing...you must be proud, Alan!

You mean you don't look like your avatar?

A very special drawing - just priceless when little ones manage to capture something true. It does go quick too (and then boo-hoo that's all you're left with!- well, nearly) - my eldest is in 1st yr of uni but fortunately the youngest is only 8 and stlll does gorgeous, unaffected drawings. I'll be sorry when they become more 'grown-up' looking. One to treasure, that one.

Tsk tsk tsk tsk.
Your child has no talent. You should either force him into a soviet-style drawing class of a teacher with a whip or never allow him to touch any pens, pencils, markers or crayola ever again.
The proportions are wrong, the camera lacks any detail, it has no shading, no 3dimensionallity, its pretty bad I say.
I won't even comment on your "portrait".

Then again, you could sell it in any gallery as a post-modern masterpiece if only you write a twenty page essay on it.

These capture more of the Artist's vision than some of the stilted, "formula", and "critically acclaimed" stuff I've seen in some upscale exhibitions.

Technically? - well - probably the artist's "mechanics" will change over time (notice I did not use the word "improve").

Aesthetically? Wonderful!!

Ahh, the joys of post modern art. I use it to explain anything weird my dad sees in today's world.
I must say it's a very impressive drawing though, remember to keep it somewhere safe like in the back of a book. My mum has a pile of drawings we did as kids, and they really are priceless artifacts.

Please do save this, you'll be glad you did when your son is older. In our home we have a wall by the stairs to our second floor covered with art work our 2 sons did when they were little. They are now in college and every time I go by the pictures they made I smile. Childhood is a precious time.

It just doesn't get any better than that!

Alan that is great! I have several drawings like that by my older daughter when she was much younger - she will graduate from college this spring - and they are priceless treasures to me.
Thanks for posting it.

I'm with Jim. It just doesn't get any better!

A couple of years ago, I did a photo trip with my daughter to the Grand Canyon. She shoots 35mm, I shoot LF. - One of my habits is that I wear a wide brimmed hat when shooting, which I often use as a lens shade. I probably shot 100 sheets of film on that trip, and I have no idea how many rolls my daughter shot, but the one image from that trip which has been printed, framed and is hanging on the wall is a candid portrait that she did of me. The image is a picture with the grand canyon in the background, the silhouette of my LF camera on tripod at the edge, and a reflection of me in my hat in the ground glass. Not the most perfectly executed image, but one which immediately brings the entire glorious week back into focus for me whenever I see it. Your child has a vision which comes through the chosen medium strongly and clearly - it doesn't get any better than that!

I hope you took him out to the local ice cream shop to celebrate!? He deserves a treat.

Thanks for enjoying this with me. Always fun to see the world through the eyes of children. I'll enjoy it for as long as I can.

Alan.
