John- storefront.com local BIA - don't overthink this each buisness area is looking for interesting pop ups to help the flavour of the community... I think the idea I just sent you via PMis is an absolute winner, just need to get the right rental equipment for the timeline...... find an area with lots of strollers and pets walking with their parents and owners, this is the area I would concentrate on, pick weekends and give it a try.

I will be interested to hear how you do.

Oh yea have an area for the kids to sit down for awhile to work on their masterpieces.

The only concern I would have about competitors having any input into the matter would arise from the fact that John would need a business license to do what he wants to do. Not that political pressure would ever be involved in something like that.....

where i live you do not need a business/commercial license to do photography.
there is no training, certification, licensing &c
unlike being a barber / hairdresser needs a cosmology license, and plumbers / electricians &c need certification+licensing ...
but not photographers.

John:
Same here, you don't need a license to work as a photographer.
But are you sure you don't need a license for a commercial location - I would need one here?

ahh

THAT is what i will be checking on this week
hopefully this will NOT end up like a laurel and hardy / 1 stooges movie
although keystone cops are ez to work with, i'll just look for a big tree
or large potted plant i can hide behind ..
i'm thinking farmers markets/parks &c i would register with organization or the town
but i dont' know if i would need a license ... i would let the po-po know what i am doing anyways
nothing worse than a guy with a giant camera looking "suspicious" ...

then you are good to go, even find the front end of a childrens or pet store to set up, ready made clients and split some back to the owners.

That would most likely avoid any problems with business licences as well.

You will need a certificate of occupancy if you attempt to do this in any retail area.

What we do now is blast out emails to our client base, figure out how many sessions we can get on the books for a specific weekend, and then either rent an actual studio space, or an empty box in a light industrial area. We move all the gear in, shoot all the sessions, then handle everything else via web galleries and email.

People want great portraits, but not nearly as much as they used to. And the number of people who demand great portraits printed on analog materials approaches ZERO. Nobody gives a crap unless they are already a photography collector.
