Another +1 for the instax system. Sharp, contrasty, beautiful film, the likes of which you won't find from impossible any time soon if ever, and cleaner and easier than pack film. The film is comparatively affordable too.
the cheapest most reliable and I guess safest would definitely be the instax as most have said.
but if you'd rather get a Polaroid and go for the TIP, then you could get a polaroid 3000RF instead of an sx-70.
it's an all plastic body with rangefinder, rather than zone or fixed focus like the other plastic body polaroids.
it also uses integral film (100, not 600) so would work with TIP film.
you can usually get them for under $30.
if you'd like, I have one I can send over to you, just pm me.
I think you meant "600 NOT 100"

except that that the SLR 680/690 are the same type as the sx-70 but use the 600 type film not the sx-70 types, well, that info is on there, but in a different section.
nope meant that it takes the sx-70 film which is asa 100 (no?), sorry if that wasn't clear

Stone's suggestion is good about maybe camera now and film later, unless you hope she moves on and you get to keep the cam
Stone,
The cubes seem to crop up on ebay every now and again. I have one of the flash gun types in my attic, not sure of the model, but I can take a look if either of you are interested. without looking I can say it works with my sonar, so imagine it would work with most others too.

So - a nice (tested) SX-70 should arrive in a few days as well as 5 (do not tell my wife) boxes of PX-70 Color Protection.
It's playtime. Once I have my fun the camera will be passed to my niece
S - after few bad images (handshake, dirty rollers) I managed to get something better looking:
I used tripod for both images as I realized that the film has ISO 125 and as the lens is slow (f/8 if I am not mistaken) it is more of an 'outdoor' camera. But the photos really do have charm. I have actually one more, but the model did not want to sign the release
EDIT: I do not have a scanner, so a P&S had to do what caused some reflections as the photos are glossy.
