Polaroid Copal Shutter question.....

A long while ago in my infancy to Large format I purchased a Tominon 75mm f4.5 lens in hopes that it would cover 4x5 (not even remotely close) I assume it was for the smaller formats (2?x3? or whatnot)
so I have this shutter, had forgotten about it in a closet. In my infinite attempt at maximizing efficiency itd be nice to be able to mount one of my barrel lens' elements in it, I have a wollensak 10 1/2" lens and the elements are almost a perfect fit.... off by mere millimeters. I dont know much about the intricacies of mounting lens into shutters (better left to experts like skgrimes etc) but it just seems such a terrible waste to have this perfectly good shutter with all these wonderful speeds and not have them utilized on anything.....

any help or suggestions would be wonderful.... or if theres been something posted about this previously just point me in the direction and Ill hang my head in shame and wander over there

The lens you have was designed to be used for close up work and as such should cover 5x4. It wont at infinity, as you know. As to remounting, yes I think that is an option, I have a couple of lenses that are in Polaroid Copal mounts. You have to be careful about spacing but the guys at SK Grimes know what they are up to.

Hiya scooter. I have quite a few of the polaroid copal shutters. Heres the deal:

The shutter for the 75mm tominon most likely has a smaller-than-normal opening. Lenses fitted for copal 1 shutters will fit, but the max aperture will be limited to one or two stops darker than in a standard shutter. This will make composing your image harder. But since most LF lenses need to be stopped down to f22, you can still use this setup if you dont have the $$ for a proper shutter.

Argentic: the copal polaroid shutters are well made shutters. They are press shutters, so they do not need to be cocked. However this also limits their top speeds. They dont have the features of other shutters like a preview lever for focussing or various flash options. Just like other shutters they are prone to get sticky after years of neglect.

Copal shutters are metric thread. Wolly lenses are US thread. Machine work is required to make such a marriage and generally unless you could do it yourself it would be a lot of $ ill spent. I haven't found too many good uses for the 15mm max aperture of the 75's shutter. That's about f10 on a 150 lens. I do have an f9 12cm WeitWinkel (wide angle) with matching thread to one of those shutters that I'll probably use one for. Quality on them is excellent. Less features is their only drawback.

not really sure what Ill do with the shutter, not likely much. Ive been managing alright without a shutter so far.
Im looking to purchase a 300mm (12") Kodak Commercial Ektar from lens and Repro so that will be nice to have a shutter mounted lens for my 8x10.
