I own a Canon F-1n which needs a circular polarizer because a plane polarizer does not work with the automatic exposure mode. If a circular polarizer is used on a camera that was built to take a plane polarizer will it result in incorrect exposure?

Ole is correct. If your camera uses TTL metering, you should have no problem either way. If exposure values differ from filter to filter, a TTL meter will compensate.
