How do I know if a plastic container is suitable for storing chemistry? Are plastic liquor bottles ok? How about plastic milk cartons? OJ cartons?

look on the bottom for the recycling number contained in the triangle.

Those with a "1" in the triangle are the safest as they are the least likely to transfer oxygen to the contained liquid via osmosis. Believe it or not, plastic soft drink bottles are usually of this type of plastic. The brown ones sold for photo chemistry, though heavier, are more likely to cause a problem.

My diluted-for-use Kodak T-Max developer has been stored in a partly full plastic soft drink bottle for many months, and is still good. An opaque plastic photo paper envelope keeps room light from it. I've had gallon milk containers eventually leak when used for fixer. However, if a bottle can contain Coco-Cola, no ready-to-use photo chemical should hurt it.
