I would definitely ask out Ansel the Saint and asked if Zone System was so precise why did he spent hours on end in the darkroom, dodging, burning, making notes and then back again.

He might simply reply, " The negative is the score, and the print is the performance."

Actually, he was greatly disappointed in the quality of much of his work do to repeatedly underexposing his images so badly that it often took years of attempts in the darkroom to make useable prints of them.
