Hi All,

I am experimenting with allowing everyone to view the Photrio gallery. Posting images still requires a subscription. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Thanks!

I see that individual's media pages can also now be viewed... when you click on someone's name and then click their media button. Everyone's except my own as I am currently unsubscribed. I am going to resubscribe soon.

No, I tried repeatedly before posting . When logged-out I am denied access to the gallery.

Strange... Maybe we are talking different things:
When logged-out I can see an overview of various members' photos, but I am denied access to the gallery of a certain member.

EDIT:

I stand corrected!

If I am logged-out I can see an overview of different members photos, but not an overview of all photos of a very member (what I can when logged-in).

BUT, after clicking on a photo, this gets enlarged and from this the next photo of his can be be seen and so on...
(So, dependant on where one clicks on, two different results are gained.)

Thus nevertheless everyone means everyone !

Will that open the galleries to be harvested by Google Images and other bots? Not something that concerns me but it might be an issue for people who post images there regularly.
It's possible yes, but I figure most concerned about that wouldn't share any work online, or would share lower res images/watermarks. Currently there are over 1 trillion images in google search. Google does not copy the images, only links to them on Photrio. This could also benefit some pros looking to have their work in front of more eyes.

In a thread 2012 concerning the gallery I wrote:

<< Not only the images are of high quality (which makes me think always twice until I decide to load up my own images, if they can keep up at least to some extent with this quality) but also the comments are in my opinion generally much more serious and useful for improving oneself than in other internet photo galleries - and critique is always formulated carefully and constructive. It may be that this high comment quality in the gallery is also due to the required subscription. So it might useful if a "free trial gallery access" would be limited to viewing images and comments - but writing comments still require a subscription. >>

I tested that comments are only possible if I log in, while I can view the images also without loggin in. I can not test if I would not be able to write comments without a subscription, which still might be a good idea. Are media comments possible for logged members without subscription?

And I am not sure if seeing the images should not be restricted to being logged in as a member (without subscription) - which would keep the search engines outside, but allow everyone how is interested to see the images.

Comments and posting are subscriber only at this stage. Mainly because I could see spam bots getting into the comments system.

I am not sure if seeing the images should not be restricted to being logged in as a member

Part of the problem with restricting access to large portions of the site is that google and other search engines tend to penalize your rankings when the bot can't access 10,000's of links, it assumes the site has issues.

Good move Sean. I have resisted uploading many photos here because I could not provide a link to non APUG users to share my photos.

Sean, it is fine in my opinion that commenting is still "subscriber only", thanks!

And:

Good move Sean. I have resisted uploading many photos here because I could not provide a link to non APUG users to share my photos.

That is true, I also missed sometimes that I could not supply a link to friends to show them my pictures here.
This advantange may make it worthwhile to open the media for general access (and with this also for the search engines).

For showing all my pictures to friends, however, I would prefer if they could use
https://www.photrio.com/forum/media/users/heinz.33208/
which seems not to work if I am not logged in.

What works without logging in is using:
https://www.photrio.com/forum/search/?type=xengallery_media
and entering user "Heinz", however I find this presentation less attractive.

Is there a reason why only the latter version works without logging in?

Heinz

I don't know why I get an alert for every gallery posting. I can't figure out how to turn that off. Not such a big deal but of no interest to me either.

You can now share your gallery media page to non-logged in users. Thanks and sorry for overlooking that.

IMO, this is a good change. Visitors who can't view images will quickly become frustrated and leave.
