Booking rooms

Of those interested in meeting up, where are you all looking to stay. I would like to stay in the same hotel. Right now there are two places that have 6 room each, Holiday Inn and American Inn. Holiday Inn is on the lake, American Inn is nearer Highway 13 about 10 minutes from the Holiday Inn. American Inn doesn't have a bar or place to eat right near by, Holiday Inn, I haven't stayed before, but it looks very nice.

I'm interested in coming as well. Just as info, it's AmericInn (not America Inn) for those searching online. I make #7 so far since the discussion was revived less than 24 hours ago, and there will probably be more to come. I'd also prefer to stay in the same hotel with others, but that may not be possible.

All of us staying in the same hotel/motel would be nice for logistics. The last few winter trips up there I stayed at the Superior Motel (about 7 years ago). Not the greatest place (rooms smelled like smoke) but their single rooms are (currently) $62 and they have more than 6 rooms available at the moment. I believe there's a restaurant across the street or somewhere close by. Holiday Inn has only double queen bed rooms at $132 (cheapest) but two people can split that and AmericInn is filling up but currently has double rooms at $94 for Thurs 10/6 and $104 for 10/7 & 8 for a total of $344.31 incl. tax. AAA or other discounts would help, too. That's all I know.....I better get back to work!

I'm staying at the Alger Falls Motel, 2 miles east on M-28. A Mom & Pop place that I always stay at in this area. The area will be more crowed because of leaf peepers. My motel is filled on Wed.? as two groups are in and apparently overlapping. I will be there Tues. afternoon if anybody else is in the area.

Glad everyone's interested in the Rocks area. I'm looking forward to exploring back along H-58 towards Grand Marais. It's been a lot of years since I've been along there.

Thanks for all the information, Marc! I'm looking at all the options, but also think it might be best to try to book somewhere where others are as well. I'll see if I can't get a group discount somewhere, but not sure we'll have enough. I'll post back if and when I find anything.

Yep, I agree. I'm actually not sure where the 'base camp area' is. I just threw the Munising thing out there. I love H-58! Last time I was there was before it was paved. Once, I was parked along side H-58 taking some pics when a coyote came slowly loping out of the woods and calmly went right by me about 20 feet away but never stopping. He/she just kinda looked at me and kept on truckin'. It was cool. No pics, though, as it was getting dark and I had Kodachrome 25 in my old Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super BC. Thanks for all you're doing, Bill. Haven't seen you in a while. Can't wait to get on the road (finally).

H-58 is paved!?! It HAS been a long time for me. Yes, Marc... it will be good to see you and everyone that comes.

I just looked at the Days Inn and they seem to have plenty of rooms at 89.00 per night. Still looking... I think Munising is the best bet for convenience, choice of eateries, etc. Jim is close by too.

Anyone know if the "Dog Patch" is still there? Used to be great for breakfast.

OK... I checked with Days Inn and they will give us a group rate of at least 79.00 per room. I wasn't able to speak with the manager until the morning and I'm told she might give us a better deal. We can also make use of a breakfast room in the evening if we want to show prints, etc. It looks clean and up to date and they have free internet, a pool, sauna, hot tub, etc. We could have a rollicking good time.

Let me speak with the manager in the morning and see what she'll do for us. I'll post as soon as I know. If this happens, book your room saying you are with North Light Workshops and you'll get the rate we are quoted.

Ha! The Dog Patch! That's where Keith (Iceland) and I would start our days on our trips up there. Dead Link Removed

Another tidbit: I haven't been up in the area since Miner's Castle had two peaks.

Days Inn sounds great!

Excellent!! That'll be my breakfast haunt.

Ditto on the Miner's Castle peaks. Back in the mid-70's I used to hike the trail a lot before it was a NP (Called the Munising Walk then...) and we were able to scale those towers. I actually have a picture of myself sitting atop the one that is no longer! Glad it waited and hope I wasn't the cause.

So is Thursday, 10/6 day one? Tom and I will coming in from Batchawana Bay, Ontario on Wednesday night, I believe.

I'm in. (but I'll be away and out of email range for the next three days.) I'm definitely interested in a night or two at the Days Inn.

Yeah, Marc ... Day 1 will be Thursday. I won't get in until the evening myself unless I can get away earlier. I'll post the info on the Days Inn as soon as I get it. I'll also look for that shot!

It'll be good to see you, Tom!

Tom, uh, since Dora will probably do you in after this trip, you might as well make the best of it and stay for the duration.

A couple blocks west of the Dogpatch (same road, west end of the 2 1/2 block strip), name unknown, is a bar with a hotdog place semi attached to the back of it with unique ordering system. Good stuff. Always have the Bear Claw a few miles east of town on H58 that has always been good (except for the last time, ditzy teen only one there). H58 has been paved for about 2 years? If you have not been there in a while you will not recognize it.

If anybody is interested in the Mosquito Falls, Grand Portal and Chapel Falls hike, I can serve a guide. I understand that they now have some post with arrows and my services may not be needed. Its 11 plus miles and worth it.

All we need is a headquarters, bulletin board or something.

Looking forward to seeing you all

I'm on Google+, an alternative to facebook with more controls. I see Schwab took up my invite and is there now as well. Yesterday Google+ moved from 'invitation only' to 'open beta' so anyone can create an account now. We could each have a Google+ 'circle' that included folks who will be in on the UP event. What happens inside a 'circle' of friends that you make in Google+ stays inside that circle, with no one else seeing it unless you specify that. You can also start a 'live hangout' on Google+, which is basically a live video conference with multiple members using web cams, each person logging in shows up in their own video window. Or you could just post to the group with your plans or suggestions for the day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, evening, etc.

Just a suggestion, not trying to sell a service or promote the social web. I'm no longer on facebook.

Lee

Looks like FilmSprocket is also on Google+.

Ok... Got the goods on the Days Inn as a base. I'm starting a new thread on this to avoid confusion, so check there. The Days is giving us a room rate of 70.00 plus tax for a double queen, or 65.00 for a single/double. I have 6 rooms blocked out until Monday morning. You'll have to book quick to get the rooms and rates as they are filling up.

http://www.daysinnmunising.com/

Call the 906-387-2493 number NOT the 800 number. The main booking office for Days won't kno of the group rate. You'll be calling the hotel directly.

Mention North Light Workshops for the group rate.

Just called and booked. The person I spoke to corrected the price quoted for the single/double that I asked for, saying it was $50 rather than $65 for the North Light Workshops. I'm not guaranteeing that, but it's a nice extra savings.

When we were up there a few years ago, our cabin host recommended the last evening boat tour of the day out to Pictured Rocks. That puts the sun to the west, lighting the rocks that generally face northwest. Our trip was sunny and beautiful, but was earlier in the summer, putting the sun further north and higher than it will be that time of day this time of year. I'll crunch some numbers on the sun position for our days there and see what looks like the probable best light.

Looking forward to it.

Booked for a double queen. (Something unsettling about that combination of words but that's what it is.) Thanks, Bill! Looking forward to meeting the new and seeing the familiar faces again. -Marc
