The art is in having the idea. The art is in executing the idea. The art is in convincing collectors that your work is collectable.

There we go.. a definition that is accurate in describing a major trait of a *successful* artist.

NOW...let's define successful. Does it mean one make a lot of money? ...or does it mean one is working, either part time or full time, at the photographic craft and is continually getting better and fully enjoys the results of his labor? I firmly believe in the latter!

well.. i defined what i considered successful in that specific quote (which was very tongue-in-cheek)

on a serious side, as you said.. the latter is what i'd prefer.. but the two don't have to be mutually exclusive (in fact, i'd bet that if your real focus was the second.. having the first come along would help things out)

Doesn't success mean to achieve your goal. And your goal could be happiness, or money, or expertise or all of the above.

So goals are often moving targets.

So maybe success is only a retrospect thing.

Given that most (but not all) of my input is digital (although most of the output is 'analog'.. platinum)... i figure success is making it through a week here without putting my foot in my mouth...

whoops....

Or like the end of a rainbow.

If you think you are a success, doesn't that mean you have settled and stopped growing?

I also think success is another of those third person, looking in the window words.

He is very successful.

Well in fact he may be a alcoholic, drug abusing, bi-polar mess who takes nice pictures but who feels suicidal half the time.

So perhaps "success" can only be pronounced by the person themselves and like I said, it's probably a moving target. Some days you may think you are successful and others not.
