Photogravure An Archaeological Research

I just received a new book\dvd set on photogravure. The book presents a hands-on instruciton in the making of photogravre prints. What is really special is that it comes with a companion dvd that is very thorough in it's coverage (unless you're already an expert in which case you'd probably find it light). For me, it has been an excellent experience watching the dvd and seeing all the things that I've only been able to read about. Plus, it is narrated by a girl with a very sexy voice.

The set is published in Norway and they shipped them to me with an invoice. The set costs about $55US. The downside is that the only way they seem to take payment is via a bank wire trasfer, which costs $45 at my bank! No PayPal, credit cards or int'l money orders. It took about 8 days to get here.

I forgot to mention that the DVD is in PAL format, which won't play on most DVD players in the US - you have to check if your dvd player will support that format.

I was able to play it on my PC using WinDVD Recorder from Intervideo:

They offer a free trial version. I downloaded it and it played the video with no problems. The download and install process took only a few minutes an dit played correctly on the first try.

I got a note from Norway. They can take personal checks drawn on US banks after all. They ask for an extra fee, chaged by their bank, to process a foriegn check. It is 75NOK, or about $13US.

That brings the total to about 520NOK or $95USD for the book\dvd set. The book is aspiral bound with stiff paper wrappers and color illustrations. I haven't read it yet, so I can't compare it to other texts, but it does not have as many pages. On the dvd, some of the steps taken are much simpler than the Kolb text or the text on copper plate photogravure.

It turns out that Windows Media Player also plays this PAL DVD. I had no idea it could play PAL dvds. It was not able to read the Chapter titles like the other player, but that is not bad for 'free' software that I got along with Vista.

I have watched this dvd several times and I get more out of it each time. There are a lot of details left out, but this really helps to demystify the process. The book covers a lot of the details left out in the dvd.

I was just thinking... I'm going to drop in there in a couple of weeks to get one for myself; so if anyone else wants one I could get a few more? That way I could take cost plus shipping per PayPal, making it a lot easier for everyone?

You didn't say, but is this in Norwegian? or English?

Both the book and dvd are in English. End credits are in some weird alphabet that I can't make out and English combined. It also has music. I believe they 'hid' some extra music on the dvd, about 12 tracks at the start of the dvd. A little bonus.

One thing I found odd, when Jan lays down the resist it is not square with the plate(it is in chapter 4). At some point he trims the plate, but I wonder why he didn't square it on the plate. The other texts discuss using goldenrod or rubylith to square up the positive when exposing it. This results in the resist being square on the plate.

Thanks to this dvd, I feel this process is well within my grasp, at least as far as getting a first plate done.

The dvd also shows making a 4-color photogravure, but that's 3 colors too many for me.

In that case, it should work with no problems at all.

Since the US dollar is doing pretty poorly at present, I make it $60 for a set plus another $10 for postage and packaging.
