I have spoken with many photographers over the years and listened to countless interviews, podcasts and instructional videos. I have noticed that many people say the word "photography" (as well as photograph and photographer) differently. Various pronunciation, enunciation, etc.

I like the way John Sexton says it. Slowly, clearly, precisely and with a touch of reverence. Of course these terms could also be used to describe his work...

Who do you think says it best and why?

Any way of saying it other than "capture" works just fine.

More critically, does anyone really know how to pronounce Brassaï properly? Since I've finally bought a book of his work. Also, I still don't dare mention László Moholy-Nagy in the real world - mostly because only academics really give a shit about his work, but also because I CAN'T GOD DAMN SAY IT!

Ben, for most these threads are likely just a way to pass a free moment or two when there's not enough time to actually go out and do real photography. I work from home. Software development. I keep APUG on a side monitor. When I get a free moment between debugging product build cycles I occasionally jump in with a drive-by post.

Like right now.

This weekend I'll be out with the 8x10, weather permitting. But I can't fit that in during the wait for a three-minute debugging build on a Friday afternoon while working.

These weekday afternoon threads are like all the Old Farts sitting around the porch at the General Store on a Saturday afternoon simply BSing to pass the time.

I find this thread much more interesting than "what's the best time for trix in D76 at 24°?" When you listen to people talk about what they truly love, the way they say things matters almost as much as what they say..
Thanks Shawn

brassaï is pronounced like " braaws ay ee " the two dots over the the ï ( tréma ) makes it so you pronounce both vowels separately
laszlo moholy nagy is pronounced in hungarian like "mo-hoy-neug"

moholy nagy is the godfather of modern graphic design and plastics work,
he did much more than make bauhaus perspective, and type+graphics-photographs and invent photograms ( simultaneously with manray ).

thanks shawn

Because someone needs to point out how puerile it is.

And you just had to take that upon yourself... I personally love word games and think it's interesting too. But feel free to put us down and tell us how stupid it is.

My thoughts echoed benjiboy's to begin with, must say, but sometimes you get little gems of information in these free-for-all threads.

Great link. And I'll try and remember the pronunciations. May just clarify when I'm in Budapest in a couple of months! If it's not flooded..

I don't know who pronounces the word photography in the best way, but I do like Fox Talbot's description of "Photogenic Drawing" before the word photography was in general use.
