I have shot a bit from the car (especially during Covid) and was also inspired by Friedlander's 'America by Car' (I have the rather huge, signed Special Edition of this book). I don't use any flash but meter for the scene outside of the car and then bump the exposure a bit, but this does result in the inside of the car being a little underexposed (see some of the images I've posted in this thread). I don't mind that look but the fill flash is something I might try in the future.I tried duplicating Lee's work (before I saw the picture above). I'm using a 40mm SLR lens (rather than 38mm) and a 90 degree prism. As you can see, without the fill flash, the outside view will be over-exposed. (obviously mine is on the right),

That's too bad. I think I've watched every Friedlander video on YouTube and Vimeo and have never come across that one. There were some Lee Friedlander videos that I did not think to download, and subsequently they have been removed from youtube.
This is the photograph that got me interested in photography. I was given a book in 1973 that had this picture. Later, in the early 2000s I had Lee sign the page with the picture.

I like this one, too, Horatio.
I don't know of many photography books like these (where all the images are from the car). Does anyone know others.

Lee Friedlander.Who is the photographer?
For those interested, Lee Friedlander's books can be ordered from Haywire Press (a company run by Lee and his grandson Giancarlo).Lee Friedlander.
Those are all signed editions - which is great, but they're expensive as a result. Many of Friedlander's in-print books can be found new on Amazon and from other photo book sellers for more reasonable prices. That said, I'd love a brand new signed copy of 'Factory Valleys' from Haywire Press, but $750 is a bit hard to swallow. For those interested, Lee Friedlander's books can be ordered from Haywire Press (a company run by Lee and his grandson Giancarlo).
I guess it depends. A used "Western Landscapes" book costs $140 (so-so state) to $430. A new one, signed, costs $150.- at Haywire. A new "America By Car" costs at least $350 at Amazon. A new and signed one (Haywire), costs $200 to $300 (depends on size). Those are all signed editions - which is great, but they're expensive as a result. Right, that's why I said 'in-print', the two you mentioned are OOP. Despite the current price, the Special Edition of 'America By Car' is fantastic. The only problem with it is that it's so huge it doesn't fit on my bookshelfI guess it depends. A used "Western Landscapes" book costs $140 (so-so state) to $430. I only started recently acquiring Friedlander's books. Do you have the "Friedlander First Fifty" book? It discusses the making of each of his books. Very nice.Right, that's why I said 'in-print', the two you mentioned are OOP. Despite the current price, the Special Edition of 'America By Car' is fantastic. I guess I was fortunate enough to buy both books when they were still available. I think I've accumulated close to 30 Friedlander books at this point. I'm going to keep hoping that I can find some of the ones I'm missing without having to mortgage my house.
Yes, I have it. Great background information on all of Friedlander's books.I only started recently acquiring Friedlander's books. Do you have the "Friedlander First Fifty" book? It discusses the making of each of his books. Very nice.
Another source for Friedlander's books is Fraenkel Gallery, a gallery in San Francisco that represents him. They still have some in-print and OOP books for sale.I only started recently acquiring Friedlander's books. Do you have the "Friedlander First Fifty" book? Damn it! Now I have to add this one to my meager Friedlander collection. Not signed or new, but I found one at a reasonable price.Another source for Friedlander's books is Fraenkel Gallery, a gallery in San Francisco that represents him. They still have some in-print and OOP books for sale.

Although still expensive at $180, they have the best price I've seen on a brand new copy of the Friedlander MoMA retrospective book:

Christmas time! The freeways are too far from that location. Are those lights to attract sleepy drivers on the freeway or something?
