How about a real introduction?

I use rangefinders. Film rangefinders. I don't have a digital camera at all. I've owned three, at one time, but sold them all to get a Nikon FE. Never went back to digital. The only digital thing I have is my Minolta Scan Dual III scanner so that I can show off my photos.

I prefer black and white film. Tri-X, TMAX, HP5, Delta 400. I also use color film, but very seldom. I'm interested in cross processing including color in black and white chemicals, black and white in color chemicals, color in E-6 chemicals, and slides in C41. I process all my own black and white film. I want to process my own color and slide film, but I'd rather have an actual processor before I take on that task.

I'm young, only 22 (23 in May) and hope someday to open some kind of a small shop. Barring that, I hope to someday be able to shoot photos in as many of the cities of the world as I can see. I love street photography and believe in the decisive moment. I take a camera with me wherever I go. At the moment I use a Canon P with 35, 50, and 85mm lenses and a Fed-5C with a 50mm. I also occasionally pull out a Meopta Flexaret VI that the slow speeds are crap on and a Canonet for when I'm feeling really lazy. No large format yet for me...and hopefully not for a while. The last thing I need is to get bit by that bug...though being able to do contact prints would be nice and those large format panoramas are very, very pretty... *headdesk*

At the moment I have no money for new equipment other than the darkroom stuff I'm planning to buy. I still have no clue where I'm going to put the enlarger/print dryer when I'm not using it...perhaps it's a good reason to clean out the closet.

I'm here to learn, share, collaborate, and work hard to become a good photographer. I've come to share with others my love of film and the chemical process. I really hope to be able to learn and teach here as well.

Young and enthusiastic about film photography... now that's how we like 'em
Welcome aboard Stephanie, share your photos and your silvery passion and have fun!

Will we see you in the Church of Rodinal (COR) ?
Cheers Søren

Planning on an outing for Rodinal and HC-110 this week. I usually use Diafine, but I want to push some HP5 and develop some Pan-F. Can't do either of those things with Diafine.

Welcome Stephanie! Lots of good ideas here. I find the galleries fascinating, and probably spend waaayyy too much time there. Enjoy. Don't be nervous about the larger format bug. I recently bought a Yashica A on ebay for a whopping $15. It's not my Rolleiflex, but the image quality is excellent. When you buy your enlarger, make sure you get one that can do medium format too. Try advertising in the local paper, there is lots of equipment out there in people's attics that Dad or Grampa used to use that folks just want to get rid of.

Rick.

I wouldn't recommend Rodinal for pushprocessing but Pan F in Rodinal should work just fine.
Regards Søren

I read this after suggesting books for your darkroom post. Upgrade to Les McLean's "Creative Black & White Photography".

Hello, Stephanie. I know you from RFF. Welcome to perhaps the best site on the web. Lots of collective wisdom here. I read more than I post, but I am always learning.

Now, now, Robert. I was careful not to say exactly what rangefinders rule. (lol)

You got me there. :D I can remember David Goldfarb taking my picture at Hawaii Kai with a handleld 4x5, using the camera's viewfinder (I kept waiting for his camera to break, but I guess he has photographed worse things with it ).

Hi Steph ... welcome here from another RFFer. Remember, the Oly 35 SP rules in the fixed lens RF world. :D

I'm really lookin forward to to your Rodinal experience.

Thanks for the welcome, AGAIN, everyone. I know I'll have lots of fun here.

Also, please don't tempt me with Leicas. I'm too tempted already to upgrade from LTM to M mount cameras.

Psssssst . . .

Well, I may get my hands on an M3...dunno yet, though. It depends on whether or not the guy likes using it. M3 with a 50 'lux at a decent price...I don't know if I could pass that up. It's an older 'lux, though...but does that really matter?

As you may already know, Stephanie, the primary difference between the different M models is the viewfinder magnification and which focal lengths the model supports with automagic briteline frames. The differences between lens vintages are really pretty minor, even if "debated" extensively by Leica nuts, er, I mean fans.

It should be noted, however, that Leicaitis is a disease that is pleasing to the soul, but devastating to the wallet.

I'm hoping that Leicaitis will be mild in me...but that's hoping for the extreme best. I've always wanted one and if I have a chance to pick one up at nice price I'm going to do it. At least I know I'll use the thing.

And did you guys see this porn? THAT is Leica porn.

Welcome Steph...from New England. I know, we are rabble rousers here...so I might as well say it: Why not try the best rangefinder on the market.. the M-7?

I guess not. Because of the viewfinder magnification, an M3 is a perfect body for a 50, and the 50 'lux that preceded the current aspherical model is a very nice lens - not as bitingly sharp as the asph, but who wants to be bitten by an asph? You may already know that the 50 'lux was optically unchanged from 1962 onwards until the asph came out, only the lens body changed. The originals have a 43 mm front thread, the later ones have a 46 mm thread. I like my old 'lux.

Best,
Helen
