You know you really need a vacation whan you look like the picture in your passport...

Nah, by that time you're too sick to travel.

Back in the early Seventies when every college student prowled the streets of every metropolitan area with a Nikkormat or FTb or SRT, stalking Skid Row for "character studies" of craggy Bums. The poor old fellows used to run away at the mere sight of a kid with a camera approaching.

There goes hopes for a magnum opus on homeless squirrels.

Oh well, back to creating massive colour photographs of empty Walmart parking lots.

Does this mean there will be sailors at your class at the APUG conference? If so, will we all have to do the YMCA and sing Village People songs as a warm up exercise?

There will be no sailors and positively no dancing.

Ah yes, pickled squirrels. Another great British delicacy banned by Brussels to further promulgate the myth that the sum total of English cuisine consists of fish and chips and roast beef dinners.

It'll be Uncle Joes Mint Balls next...

Gosh, I haven't had fish & chips or roast beef on any of my trips to England. I think I got ripped off...

If there is a dumb law then I've gotta go out and break it!

This is very near my house. He was coming from the direction of the liquor store. Around here a lot of homeless ride these decrepid old bicycles. This one has a trailer to haul his junk around in. Astia 100, 80-200 2.8 Nikkor, Nikon F3.

Now, how do you know he is homeless?! He might be just trying to transport himself without emitting greenhouse gases and he needs the trailer because when you shop at Wal-Mart, you usually leave with a lot of stuff!

I think the Brits call cooked squirrel "roast beef", so be careful what you ask for.

nc5p, that guy is so far away I can hardly see him, much less tell if he's homeless, so I think you're okay.

Don't ask me - I'm the one that thought "spotted dick" was something one kept very hush hush until he could get to a clinic...

About bloody time. Next up (repeating myself from another forum) - a ban on art student self-portraits that rip off Nan Goldin and/or Cindy Sherman.

Under the circumstances I withdraw my reference to Uncle Joe's Mint Balls...

That would probably be appropriate, considering...

Check out the newest issue of LensWork. "Men Like Me" by Bill Jay, portraits of the homeless in a southern Calif beach town. The images are very disturbing, scary. But well worth a look.

Maybe we should take a lesson from what it takes to be a good photographer; "The only good photographer is a dead photographer."

You might think that, students being what they are, will try to photograph what is easiest and most readily available. Apparently the homeless fall into that catagorie. I suppose that looking at a constant parade of homeless people on a daily basis can be very disturbing. Almost like sticking your head in the sand and trying to breath.

I actually think that it just spawned that discussion...and he took it out of the other thread to avoid mixing the two.

Funny, but this seems to be a problem which cuts across international lines. I think it IS a conspiracy by the "power elite" which has caused this problem. I'm sure if we look deep enough, we will find that Bush, Cheney and Blair, along with the oil companies and car manufacturers, are the ones pulling the strings in a world wide conspiracy. If we were to dig a bit deeper still, we will find that these plots have been in existence since ancient times, and that this society to promote homelessness has been handed down over thousands of years, similar to the DaVinci Code.

"Anyway, because of the greed from the power elite, we have thousands and thousands of homeless in the streets of Vancouver. It's shameful and disgusting and what's worse is people stealing their last ounce of dignity by taking their pictures. There's one a-h_le on the pnut who gets a kick from shooting them, along with Vancouver nickel & dime hookers. Shame! Shame! Shame!"

So I'm wondering, what should be done about this terrible problem? It seems that the simplest solution is the best solution. I think a law should be passed which will imprison any and all photographers who willingly, or by mistake, take pictures of the homeless. This would serve to improve the community by removing the filth of film lovers from society, so that progress can be made into the digital nirvana of the future. Yesterday evening I called the police when a group of three of these sterling fellows started to accost my neighbor. They were using the "m.f." word in addressing him in front of his small children. Yep, wonderful fellows, these three. tim

Nah. If they did that they'd have to go after Willie hanging a rat in the WH. The Nova-Dems would never stand for it.
